Cam Break In?

I see that with our cams... they are roller cams and do not require a break in period? Is that totally correct?

What about the supporting parts? The Comp R Lifters, 1.6rr, valve springs, and timing chain? Do they have a breakin period?

Also, my oil was changed not to long ago, maybe 500 miles. You think I should drive about 500 miles then change my oil? What oil would you guys recommend in my car in an area that goes below freezing almost everyday in the Winter, sometimes below 0.

Re: Cam Break In?

If you already put 500 miles on the cam that should be fine. As for oil 5w-30 would be good for the cold weather.

Actually the cam isn't even in yet. Its going in next week sometime. I just want to be totally sure before I start driving it that I can't bang 2nd or 3rd.

Re: Cam Break In?

opinions will vary, I would give it at least 500 miles if it was mine.

Re: Cam Break In?

There really isn't a specific break in procedure for the roller cams. I cranked the engine without injectors running a few times or so to get some oil pressure then I fired it up and kept it at 3000 rpm for a couple of minutes. (again, this is mostly done on flat tappet cams but I decided it wouldn't hurt to do it either way) I drove about 30 miles or so then changed the oil. (Valvoline non synthetic) Changed the oil again after a few hundred miles.
It isn't necessary to go through all these steps, but I changed the oil a couple of times because I replaced the oil pan gasket at the same time and some dirt and/or coolant could've found its way inside, but other than that, you should be fine.

Re: Cam Break In?

Do an oil change 100 miles after the cam install and run the **** out of it.

Re: Cam Break In?

I think I am going to go with Ion's method... you kept it at 3k for 30 minutes though? Man thats freakin long!! I'd rather drive it around for 30 minutes... L0L

Also, I hope you're ready to custom tune my man. Because i'm going to you for it. :-D

Thanks Ion

Re: Cam Break In?

Read again. I said a couple of minutes @ 3000.
You are in your free update period still. Mail me the OBDI and $13 (shipping) and I will load a new tune on it for you.

Re: Cam Break In?

It is a good idea to do some heat/cool cycles on the engine. The valve springs will especially like that.

Yes. The 612 springs you ordered also like to shed a little metal in the first hundred miles. Change the oil after the install and use the cheapest stuff you can find. Then dump in your choice stuff after 100 miles and change the filter again. Probably not a bad idea to change it after another 500 miles as well.

Re: Cam Break In?

Heat/Cool cycles? Like turning the car on and letting it idle for a while?

Re: Cam Break In?

As in drive the car around, shut it off and let it cool, then do it again. Just normal driving.

Re: Cam Break In?

Hey Ion, you still do the program in the email right? Samething as if I sent you the entire system?

I'd rather it done that way, that way my PCM never has to leave my car. Thanks

I've heard numbers of 310rwhp and 330rwtq numbers... man thats crazy. Its like this car is going to have a motor swap. :-D
