Cam bearing worn down to the copper?
Cam bearing worn down to the copper?
I just pulled my cam out, and my front cam bearing is worn down to the copper, not just a little strip of copper showing, all of it is copper on the lower 1/2, and most on the top too. I really don't have the money for a rebuild right now

Re: Cam bearing worn down to the copper?
It's usually the worst looking, but the others are probably not far behind. If you are not going to replace them all (engine pull necessary), you can at least change the front one with the engine in the car. Only you can determine what is the best course of action for you.
Re: Cam bearing worn down to the copper?
72K miles. The previous owner put 1.75" high 1.45" wide dual valve springs in it too and ported heads, the rest was stock if that matters. The car doesn't burn any oil or smoke or anything like that at all. I don't see why the bearings would be worn out after only 72K miles though.
Re: Cam bearing worn down to the copper?
I got worried about mine when I did the HC a few years ago. I spoke to a friend who worked as an Auto mechanis for 30 years. His response was that in all the years he worked on cars he very rarely saw a cam bearing go bad. I put mine back together as it was, and have had no problems in 15k miles. YMMV
