cam

I am looking at putting a cam in this winter. Could do it myself and not have many problems, or would i be better off taking it to someone to have it done. If i cant do it what would i look at price wise for installing it. If i can do it myself what was the best way to remove it. i am unsure of weather or not i have to pull the motor to get it out or not. After figuring out this part of the puzzle I will decide what cam i am going to go with. I have heard many good things about the hot cam. Does it provide a significant increase in power with out doing much head work? Thank you for the help in advance.

They have a good guide on a cam install. Just do a search on cams you will find tons of info. The hotcam, cc305, or 224/230xe are pretty popular. None of these require headwork. There are a lot of cams available though. So try to figure out your needs first. Do you have emissions? Or you can go to cmotorsports.com and give them a call. They are a great help and know what they're talking about.

If you have the tools, it shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have the tools, look at buying a nice package. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

I never had any mechanical skill, other than changing the thermostat on my '88 Camaro about 3 times a year. Then I got my '95 last year and everything changed. I started out with the simple mods (TB bypass, !CAGS, sensors) and worked my way up.

I personally didnt have the time and materials to do it myself.....but if i had then i would have done it myself.........but it sure is easy to take it somewhere if you have the money....

After everything on mine, including tuning, mine came to 1200 bucks......which is not bad considering a new opti, LT4 hotcam KIT, LT4 extreme duty timing chain and he fixed a couple of oil leaks, and i got 35 rwhp after it was said and done which is pretty damn good........After the cam my LT1 turned into a car with LT1 grunt down low and LS1 top end power..........basically i owned my brother afterwords when i raced his LS1.......

we do not currently have any admission controls here. I was also looking in the summit magizene and they have the lt1 to lt4 conversion kit for 2300. is that a good deal. they said that it should give you 425+ hp. The kit includes the lt4 hot cam, lt4 heads, and lt4 intake manifold.

thats a decent deal, but you will not see 425hp. Go back and look at past threads where this issue came up. I would get a nice set of ported lt1 heads and cam. Actually Combination Motersports quoted a friend of mine $2300 for a 400rwhp kit. I'd do that anyday over the LT4 conversion kit. I think most would agree. Good luck.

You will get no where near 425hp with that kit. As for you doing it yourself. That's a hard one because no one here knows how much experience you have on cars nor do they know your warchest of tools. But I would say if you have an average knowledge of working on cars like changing waterpumps yourself and stuff you can do it. Make sure you get a good manual also. The links are good but I always refer to a good manual.

The reason I say about changing a waterpump is, a couple of months ago...thats all I did. I blew my motor in august. Since then with the help of people here, I've removed motor and tranny, totally dismantled motor and had it taken to the shop. Ported and polished my own heads (which came out awesome I must say ) and wil be reassembling my motor on Saturday and putting it back together.

I say go for it and save yourself a wad of cash. But like a lot of people here have told me....just take you time, do it right, and do a lot of research before you dive in.

Good luck

The only knowledge i have working on cars has been on my previous 90 thunderbird supercoupe where i did change the water pump and ignition setup. As far as working on my camaro I have not done that yet, due to my warranty that came with the car. Also another question... how much horsepower and torque can the automatic trans take. I also had an idea of buying a old car with a 350 in it for cheep and taking the motor out and working on it just to gain experience before doing it to mine.
