Cam 180* off?

I have a 94 Z and we recently did a cam swap. Upon trying to start the car, it fired a flame out of the intake. This leads me to believe the valves are opening wrong, possibly 180 degrees off. I have a splined opti drive so i dont think that is the problem since it only goes on one way. Can this be fixed be taking the cover back off and making sure that both dots on the sprockets are at 12 oclock(TDC #1) then begin setting the valve lash? Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are very welcome. Thanks!!!

On 94's you have 2 insert holes of equal depth that the dowel pin on the opti can go into..
1 is correct. 1 is 180 degrees off.

Yep, as said above, if you put both gears at 12 o'clock, the cam is 180* out. Cam dot should be at 6 o'clock and crack dot at 12 o'clock. Sorry dude, that sucks! Thats an oops you wont make twice!

I did place the cam gear at 6 oclock this first time but i thought that was TDC for the number #1, but i have now read that that is TDC #6 when the dot is at the bottom. I think i could have possibly adjusted my valves backwards. Would this cause the valves to be so off to shot exhaust out of the intake?

It makes no difference if you installed it dot-to-dot or both dots at 12:00. Just remember dot-to-dot, #6 is at TDC, and both dots at 12:00, #1 is at TDC. Most people who does dot-to-dot rotates the crank 1 full revolution (cam 180*) to get both dots at 12:00 so they can adjust the valves starting at #1 TDC rather than #6.

Thanks everyone for their replies. i found the problem. At about 11 am this morning i figured out that the valve lash was way too tight. my friend brian and i reset the lash and she fired right up. The new cam and headers made it a new car!!! Now if i can just set the idle.

Amen. A couple people responded that 12 and 12 is wrong, when it definitely is not (no, you are not 180º off). It is just as correct as 12 and 6, but harder to judge by eye.
