Re: California residents, chip in about emissions testing for a newcomer

I have the 230/236 cam in my car and I live in the bay area. So far everyone has told me it won't pass even though I have all the emmisions stuff still hooked up. I think I'm just going to take it in and see what happens. The car is also untuned and when I dynoed it the afr looked fine. I have to register my car before January 10. Any help would also be appreciated on this. If my 230/236 cam can pass I'm sure the CC306 has a chance as well.

I had a modded 95 TA that I just sold. I was getting tired of dealing with the smog crap. When you come to the state, you will have to get a smog certificate to register the vehicle. Depending on the shop, they might look at EVERYTHING and check all the numbers. Or, you might get someone who just puts in on the machine without looking at a single thing as happened to me once. A friend went through and put everything back to original, only to have the tech never even look at the car.

You are in luck in that you have a 95. The later cars (96+) with OBD-II have to be plugged in to the computer during the test. They can't do that with the older cars.

Another wrinkle to watch out for is that you may get sent to a smog check only station. So, even if you have someone who can do the job for you for an extra fee, you might have to take it somewhere else. They say that a random percentage of cars gets sent to the test only stations, but I got hit with it twice.

Some of this only applies in Southern California, since we have the worst smog problem. Of course a recent study showed that something like 40% of cars failed a random roadside test only a few months after passing a smog check.

Yes, that's right. You might get hit with a random check. I have personally seen it. I drove right by, and they could have waived me in. They say that you can refuse, but I don't want to try that one. This is big brother land California, after all.

My advice: sell your car and buy one here in CA. Do legal mods to it, and you'll be fine.

No chit! Back in 93 I went to Concord (just outside of SF) to a training class and I was talking to some locals and I was dumbfounded at the cost of housing out there especially since they were making about the same as me or less. We had just bought a 1100 sq ft house (2 yrs old) for 62K and the guys out there said based on my desc of the house I'd be over 200k out there and that was way back then... F'n crazy...

Can the CC306 not be had in various LSAs? My understanding was the 306 can be bought with 110/112/114 LSA. If you are on 112 or 110 LSA good luck. I had to finagle my tuning big time to get my 230/238 112 lsa cam to pass the dyno sniffer test here in AZ. I have shorty headers and and still running a cat too. Passing visual in AZ is easy since cats being moved won't be noticed by most techs since they are dumb and longtube headers are "legal" as long as the "cats aren't moved" which nobody realizes anyways. If that 306 is on a 114 LSA you might have a chance passing as long as you get passed visual (so get some CARB legal headers etc. and make sure your tune is spot on). I actually parked int he emissions testing centers parking lot here - then uplaoded a new open loop tune to my PCM real quick that was set really lean...after i passed i then pulled ahead into the parking load and booted the laptop back up and set the tune back to the original tune which wouldn't pass before. Stupid goverment.

Re: California residents, chip in about emissions testing for a newcomer

I've been thru this smog stuff so many times I had to make a reply on this one...

A few years back, i kept failing the test. Not because of the visual, because it was putting out dirty air, in fact a gross polluter. If you are a gross polluter, the state is notified via computer. The smog place was a test only station. Apparently our cars do not have a good reputation as far as passing the test, big surprise ha. Anyway, after failing the test, I reprogrammed it back to stock and brought it back. This time it failed by a hair, it was very close. After failing a second time, I knew something was wrong. I decided to take the cat off the car and found a few small broken "bricks" inside of it. Basically the cat had been destoyed.

At this point I made a big gamble. I decided to go all out and install the flp longtube headers/dual cats which were sitting in my room, along with an all new exhaust system. Along with this were new plugs and wires. The car previously had eldelbrock shorties on it with a single cat and the procharger blower. The power increase was quite amazing.

I brought it back in a few months later and it passed with flying colors. In fact, the car was running cleaner than it ever had.

Basically you have to look around and talk to people. Bring your car to several shops and see what they say. Do not go to ritsy areas like Irvine or Beverly Hills. You would be better off going to lower income areas.

I see the only problem with you passing is your cam and the fact that your air is disconnected. The flp's have all the smog hookups including the egr.
