Calif smog question
Calif smog question
Got a question for any California guys out there regarding smog. I just smogged my 96 Z28 and the guy made me go home and remove my GMPP cold air (same as SLP, just not powder coated) and replace it with the stocker even though I had the printout of the E.O.#. He said since there is no part number on the intake, he can't be sure that's what it is. No big deal, it only took me an hour to swap.
Here's my dilemma, though. I have a set of brand new in the box SLP dual cat headers waiting to go on. They have no part number on them even though they have an E.O. number. I'm going to run into the same problem, most likely. Swapping the headers out will take way too long to do it every 2 years.
What have you guys done? Any input is appreciated!

I guess I didn't make myself clear. Not only is there no part number, the E.O. # is not stamped anywhere on the headers. There is a large SLP logo, but the dumbasses at SLP didn't think to tack-weld on a part number or the E.O. #.
Since their customer service blows, I doubt they will help me.

But yeah, you can expect that SLP will be no help once they have your money.
Maybe find a less difficult smog shop? I've smogged my car with a LPE CAI that has no E. O. number on it. But the headers will likely be a problem. Maybe if you brought along a SLP catalog? It may have photos and the E. O. number that a smog tech would trust.

Anyway, this time around the DMV required that I go to a Test Only station. Not sure why. My car has always passed with flying colors because it's nearly stock. There is no way this guy would have passed my car unless I had a part number stamped on the cold air intake or the CARB E.O. sticker on the car. He would not budge. I may have to look around, but it's not going to get any easier with the whole "green" movement being the latest fad.

I'm surprised you found a shop that actually opened your hood. Just find another shop that doesn't do visual and just checks the computer and sniffer. Most shops might not even recognize that your headers are not stock, unless they're ceramic coated.
Also, I don't know if you'll have CARB numbers for your dual cat SLP headers. I have SLP shorties, which are legal, and I called up SLP years back and they just sent me replacement CARB stickers.
Bottom line, find another smog shop.

Every smog shop I've ever gone to opened my hood. The last time I had the car smogged (different shop), the guy was concerned about the cold air kit, but I showed him the page I printed from the CARB website with the EO# and he let me slide. This last time, I had to go to a test only shop, so my choices of shops were somewhat limited.
Thanks for your input!

Find a different shop, period. I passed smog with my stats at a test only station as well. I've been to some in the past that were pretty hard headed about my SLP headers. The cam was a non issue, passed with flying colors as long as your cats are good. SLP sent me the stickers but never needed them as the next time I went to a differnt smog shop...you have to shop around to find a good one.
Do you have the SLP shorties or longtubes, since you say they have cats attached? I had the legal shorties.
I didn't have to prove it..I just called them up and said I bought some used shorties from a message board and they sent them to me. I'll check if I have an extra one..I think they sent 2. If so, I'll let you know. Don't think the shop will check exactly what the CARB sticker is for.
Yeah, I was surprised they didn't ask for verfication like a picture or something...might just be I got lucky with the guy who picked up the phone at the time at SLP...who knows?
It wouldn't hurt for you to call them.
While you're at it, call up K&N and get a CARB sticker from them for the CAI..I know you don't have K&N, but doubt the shop would know. I also bought a used K&N CAI from this board and needed that sticker. Come to think about it, I'm a cheap bastard and my car is full of used stuff from this board.

As far as test only, I think that after a car reaches a certain age, they are automatically sent to test only. My 93 gets test only every time.
