CAI or catback first?

Yes, I searched first, really didn't find any striaght answer. My 95 z is stock. I love grunt off the line, I won't ever be going over 5,500 (I try to limit to 4-5k). The reason I can't do both at once is I have to use my parents concrete driveway. I know its stupid, but one thing at a time. Plus money, my days off are split and I don't want to spend all day under my car. Either way, these first two mods will stay on the motor through all my upgrades. So, what did you do first? CAI or catback? Would you have done it differently? Feel any difference with just cai or catback? I plan on going the slp or k&n cai, and the catback choice is the loudmouth (mmm, loud and raspy ). Sorry if this post is incoherent, not much sleep.

I don't know about others, but I have the stock exhaust on my 95 Z and just installed a Lingenfelter CAI last weekend and I swear the car feels a little stronger.

IF you want power go with CAI if you want sound go with a catback.

Here this will help you Chris

And driveway? You should BE so lucky! I did all of my mods on all of my cars (except for headers on the formula) uncluding pulling an engine and a tranny swap in my front lawn!

And so i dont seem like a total *** I'll be helpful. Go for the intake if you plan on doing headers down the road. A true dual setup is CHEAPER than a cat-back so you might as well just wait. If you arent going to do headers, then go for a cat-back. How a car sounds is every bit as how it looks and performs. With the cat-back you get all 3, sound, shiny tips, and about 15rwhp.

Re: CAI or catback first?

CAI = 5-7 rwhp and a slight sucking/hissing sound from the intake.
Catback = 8-10 rwhp(if chosen wisely) and different sound.

The CAI can be installed anywhere, you don't need a driveway. The catback would be nice to install over a solid surface like a driveway that you can get the car up on ramps/jackstands.

Even though you've said you can't do both at once, I think it's worth mentioning that they go hand in hand. I did both at the same time, and noticed a decent improvement.

I've talked with several people who've done them one at a time and were a bit disappointed in the results afterward. Depending on which one was done first, they always seemed to be convinced that the second one made a big improvement, when in fact it's just that they are co-dependant.

Re: CAI or catback first?

Within 2 hours of getting the car from the dealership, I was at the track to get the base line for the car.. It was used and only had 24Kmiles on it so I didn't have to worry too much about breakin.. The next day I was at home depot getting a few of the last parts needed to finish my own CAI.. I bored the MAF while I was in there, and gutted the cat, then drove to the local muffler shop that charged me $60 for a cutout, that afternoon I hit the track again, with those mods that cost me less then $100.. The temp was similar and actually a little hotter on the second day and my times went from 14.1 @ 98 to 13.6 @ 101 both days I had a similar 60" time of about 2.02 on street tires.

So a long storry to tell you I did my own CAI, and free'd the exhaust up but kept the stock pipes, for real cheep, and did it in less then a day for some good gains, without breaking the bank!

I now also have the advantage that if I want to do headers or change the exhaust, I didn't waste money on the current setup..

Re: CAI or catback first?

I too have this problem. I think because of a lack of $$ I'm going to go for the CAI upgrade but even with that I can't find something I like just yet.

What I'm looking for is a CAI that looks good (polished) as well as perform well but can't seem to find the duo, it seems that I have to sacrifice one for the other, or I'm just looking in the wrong place?!

I like the reviews of the Lingenfelter but I think it looks bad. Anyone have any ideas? Need some help here.

Key word..."had"...now you've got a monster machine . Do you have any pictures of how the SLP looked? Also, could you put some data behind "performed great"?

THANKS!

Re: CAI or catback first?

i did the CAI first, and i tested it against my buddies stock cobra and it helped a lot. even with stock exhaust.

stock for stock at the end of the 4th from a 30mph roll on i had 2 car lengths on him. with no other changes, the cai gave me another 2 car lengths at the end of 4th.
