A/C problems

Hey guys,
Maybe you can help. I had a leak in the a/c system for a while. Not knowing much about it, I took it to a mechanic sometime last year. He fixed it temporarily. One of the things he did, beside recharging it is he jumpered a ground on the relay, said the clutch was not engaging otherwise. Anyway, with that ground, the a/c is always engaged, no matter what position the switch on the dashboard is. The pressure on the low side is around 10, but it will not charge. I know the clutch is engaged, is the compressor gone? I tried jumpering the pressure switch (red to grey), with the ground wire off the relay, nothing happens, the compressor will not kick on. The only way it engages is with the ground, and it will not disengage with it. The switches on the dash seem to work fine, have no problem with heat.
Please help, it's pretty hot in Florida now.
