A/C Compressor removal questions
A/C Compressor removal questions
Guys,
I want to remove the A?C compressor and clutch as a unit from my 1996 Z28. Are there any gotchas I should know about before I undertake this effort?
Will long tube headers get in the way of manuvering the assembly out of the car?
Thanks,
John

It should be s straight forward job. 3 bolts in the front on the A/C unit. Once those are out you can move the A/C forward to reach the 1 bolt in the back which is the A/C compressor line. Then slide it forward then tilt it downward. You might have to remove the compressor line cause it will be in the way. Once done you'll need the 1LE pulley were the A/C use to go. You'll see how easy you can reach your plugs. Dont forget to drain the freon.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that the compressor could come out the front.

Vinny,
Yeah, I was concerned that the compressor would have to come out to the rear and get all screwed up with the long tubes. From your response, it appears that the compressor comes out from the front of the engine (toward radiator).
Thanks again,
John

I did my compressor last year and found it a lot easier to remove with the front sway bar loose and hanging down a little to give clearance for the compressor to come out. Just wanted to add that, it helped me out.
