Talking buying an lt1, but scared of a4 failure......

A friend of mine is shopping for an lt1. We found a good lookin 94 z28 a4 stock with the 150mph speedo (I believe those came w/z rated tires and 3.23 gears?). The test drive was pretty ok but one thing that we both notice was that when he floored it, it hesitated and took about a half a second to downshift. Does this say anything about the transmission?

We believed that that may turn into something worst in the future? Please correct me if I'm wrong. This car had 84k miles on it! So we wanna know if this is a good deal for 6k. The motor seems to run alright, may need a good tune as I rode in some stronger lt1's. There's seems to be a airy like sound coming from the right side of the motor also (facing front of car) it may have been a exhaust manifold leak or something. Kind of hard to explain the sound but it was just a bit louder than a normal lt1, and no I didn't see a cai.

The car is at a mom&pops dealer, been there for close to a week they said, no warranty. All that being said do you think he should go forward with purchasing this car? We are both just rookies at heart. Thanks f-body family for any further info!

When my 89 camaro did that it was the TV cable out of adjustment. A 94 has a 4L60E so no TV cable is there so it may have something to do with the electronics of the trans. Also my 96 S-10 had the 4L60E too and mine did it when the altenator took a pooper. May want to check the voltage gauge. Just some things to think about. Also the TPS (if thats what the downshift is based off of) could be bad or out of adjustment.

Yes and I hate it, It makes me allways give a car from a float to whoever I play with.

Call up a local mechanic that you have gone to before and hasnt screwed you over, and make an appointment with him to quickly check over the car. Most places should do it, but it depends on how busy they are I suppose.

I would always worry about buying an A4, I've owned one and many of my friends have. Pull out the tranny fluid stick and smell it, see if it smells burned. Look at the fluid on it and see if its darker then normal or discolored. Generally people NEVER change the tranny fluid and thats why they fail. If the fluid is flushed every 20k miles they usually are pretty good. Problem is most people dont do it, or they wait till its already giving them problems to do it.

My 94 vette is the same way, and other people complain about it too, so I think it's normal.

Something small to look into might be a tranny mount. It migh be torn enough for it to give u some play but not slam into the body, which a completely torn mount would.

There are plenty of lt1 fbodies around, if you have doubts just look at the next one.

Ok thanks for all the info guys. Now the a4 cars that had the 150mph speedo came with z rated tiers and 3.23 gears didn't they?

The 3.23 performance axle were seperate options GU5 ... G80 and the 150 speedo did not come with those options

the Z rated tires would allow them to raise or eliminate the speed limiter and they put in the 150 speedo along with the Z rated tires option
