Question buying a high mileage z28?

I've had my gtp for about 2 years now, it has a little over 80k mi. It is very reliable and will last me far through college if it needed to. It's fairly quick, running low 14s close to touching 13s. I figure its still worth about $7.5k or so being in great condition.

Before the gtp i had a 94 camaro v6. I loved this car. Once it hit about 175k mi though the tranny and engine both started to die and i had to get rid of it or put a lot of money into it. So i bought the gtp and have had mixed feelings about it ever since. I have nothing to complain about with the gtp except the air conditioning doesnt work worth a crap and the fan squeeks and occasionally screams at me.

In may i spent about $5500 and bought my R6. And now my friend the mechanic back home is trying to get me to buy his 94 Z28 6spd with 158k mi on it. T-tops, repainted navy blue a couple years ago, and chrome ('97+ camaro) 5 spokes I was thinking yah yah whatever dude. but then he says "for you....$2800" and it has a nitrous kit already installed in it. And now im seriously considering it. He took me out in it and it still runs like it's brand new. I know id love this car as much as my old one. And if it had a minor break down i would have some dough left over from selling my gtp to fix it. It seems like a dumb move but damn i would love having this car instead of kind of liking my gtp.. What do you guys think?

Re: buying a high mileage z28?

okay let me clarify a few things, it was owned by someone that i still don't know anything about but probably a little older than my friends and i (low 20s)until about 80k when one of my friends bought it. He put a ton of highway miles on it (about 50k) in a couple years by driving 600+ miles a week.

then my other friend bought it off him and put on the nitrous kit, and put about 8k-ish miles on it. when this friend bought it he dropped a bit of money into rebuilding the tranny i know.

so a lot of the miles are highway and the tranny should be in good running order

I personally would keep the GTP, if you know it will last you through college why buy a potential headache. Keep the 3k and save it for a down payment when you graduate and get a better job and can buy a low mileage Camaro or vette.

Re: buying a high mileage z28?

I vote you keep the GTP as well. I had a 00 GT running mid 14's, I bought a "high mileage" Z28 because I missed my old V6 95 that I had. I love my Z but I've dumped so much money into this car that ran "like new" when I drove it. Being in college I say keep the reliable GP for a while longer, and get a nice Z28 later down the road, and hopefully not have to worry about any problems from a high mileage one. I still drive my GP more, because I'm always fixing the maro.

Re: buying a high mileage z28?

The only thing that worries me about a high mileage LT1 is the good ole head gasket blowing, been through that on a previous Z28 that I owned.

The Trans Am I now have hasnt had that problem yet (123,000 miles) but everytime I drive it wonder when it will happen.

It is not that big of a deal to repair just lot of time involved.

I work at a Corvette shop and do see the C4's from time to time with blown head gaskets (currently working on a 1996 with 94,000 miles) and the TPI motors also seem to have this problem.

Then again there are people on this board with over 200,000 miles and have never seen a head gasket problem.
