Buying a cam... Need advice
Buying a cam... Need advice
Hey guys, Im buying a set of stock heads this weekend and Im gonna get them ported. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on a decent cam for my setup. It still is daily driver but I want to make some more power out of it. Also, what else do I need to go with heads and cam? 1.6RR's a good choice? springs, lifters, and retainers? Thats it?
couple of things: Get heads done by a reputable outfit with plenty of good experiences on this site. Or, if you have someone else, a local outfit do them, be sure to have them flowed and take a look at them BEFORE the valves are installed---to make sure they actually they actually did the job. You need to determine what kind of driving you will be doing, i.e., in what RPM range will you spend most of your time----and what kind of an idle do you expect to have, i.e. drivability factor when selecting a cam. You will get plenty of feedback on the cam here.
Apparently you are not afraid of emissions cops, otherwise you wouldn't be running long tubes.
As far as 1.6 RRs, go with non-self adjusting, using hardened push rods and quide plates. The springs should match the specs of your cam card.
Don't skimp on cheap parts. JMHO

A cc503 cam, spring set, 1.6 NSA promags, guide plates; that should be all you need. The cc305 is also good. You could use stock lifters, timing chain and pushrods; but I would go with ls7 lifters, hardened pushrods, and a new chain set. Also if you have the cash and want the best out of this set up LE or AI would be the way to go for the heads and cam.

To get better answers you need to tell more about what your looking for.
Based off what you have said I would not take your stock heads to some local joint. For the amount of money your going to spend(no matter how big or small) will go much further with someone with LT1 porting experience. You will get so much more for your money.
Go with a AI/LE package, buy good parts. You may regret it otherwise.

Like the others said, get em done profesionally and let the porter help you select a cam
that matches your goals, preferences and the characteristics of the portwork you select.
Click http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2297151/4. I documented my LE2/1HL build there.
Very streetable and surprises everyone on the street and at the track
You should easily be able to clear 400rwhp with even a mild setup done right.
