Buy a used motor or do a rebuild?

Buy a used motor or do a rebuild?

I'm pretty sure my car threw a rod and now i'm looking at swaping it out. I already have most the work down to drop it out the bottom but i'm still stuck on what i should do.


I don't have much money so i plan on doing most the work myself. How hard is it to rebuild yourself vs. having someone build it? I've read most of the rebuilding small block chevy book at autozone but it looks like i need atleast a lot of special tools.

Or

My other option is i found a block with 20k on it with rods pistons and crank already installed and all i will need to do is swap over my heads, intake ect. Atleast this way i can sell my old block and rods after i get them fixed or if they're not damaged.

Whats the pros and cons over rebuilding it over just purchasing the block and putting it all together. And is there anything i should look at besides the common areas for cracks while inspecting the block?

If you do go used...check the cylinders to see if you still have crosshatching pull the pan and pull a main bearing cap to see the condition. If you have crosshatching then you can verify the low milage and feel the bearing you pull to see if there is any inperfections. Be sure to replace the oil pump. ALSO IF THERE IS AN OIL FILTER FROM THAT MOTOR CUT IT OPEN AND LOOK FOR METAL FRAGMENTS!!

What exactly is cross hatching? And main bearing cap being the one infront of the cam?

Its actually just a block with the crank rods and pistons installed.

Crosshatching is a pattern that you will see inside a cylinder as a result of the honing process...if it is still fresh even with 20k you should still see this.

A main bearing cap is a cap that contains the bearing that retains the crank to the block...this will be present even with just a rotating assembly mounted in the block (shortblock)...no need to post pic if you slide your finger nail over the bearing and feel a groove or if you see a copper color you dont want that motor.

don't be afraid to take the pan off and do this it will provide vital information about the engines condition. Also like i said if there is an oil filter available from that motor disect it any metal flakes inside and you want nothing with that motor.

I speak from experience and have purchased many used motors in the attempt to keep cost down for a few projects. Either you should do all of these things mentioned or if you can afford it pay for a rebuild by a reputable local shop with a warranty.

def sell if you found a 20k motor or keep your motor and rebuild it for the future when your car is a collectible
