burning and leaking oil

so this summer i swapped a cammed lt-1 into my 96 rs. the motor and tranny from the donor car had a fresh rebuild on them with about 2k miles on them. it leaked and burned alittle bit of oil, but i figgured it would go away after the "second" break in....i assume that this donor car had been sitting for awhile, thus it would need to break in again. well....now months later neither have totally stopped and i am looking for some advice. the leak is minimal now, just a few drops every now and then it looks like (maybe the oil filter? or pan seal?). the burning seems to be in the higher rpms when i really get into it and also when i drive on the highway (abt 70-75mph) when i let the car coast down for my exit it will smoke when i give it gas again. so guys....anyone have any suggestions or have this happen to you before? any and all input is appreciated.
thanks
- trey

*edit* the rear and main seals were replaced when the swap was done.

could be your oil sensor, mine leaks very minimal, and I heard there is no way to fix it, it must be replaced.

Smoking on offramp after freeway driving sounds like oil dripping the exhaust. I would check your valve covers.

cool thanks for the help, i will check those out. if the oil is indeed dripping on the exhaust would it appear like the smoke (grey-ish smoke) is coming out of the pipes? and could this also be the cause if it is happening before i get on the on ramp, because it typically happens after i slow down and merge before i start up the ramp itself.

i also would not be suprised if your intake manifold is warped causing oil to leak down the back of the motor, try to reach your hand around there and see if you can feel where it is coming from

Yes, it will smoke, usually it will bellow out out of the sides of the hood, sometimes even coming in the cab, often when you slow down after doing some highway driving. Check the sides and rear of the valve covers for oil drips. Also check the rear of the intake manifold, thats is a very common place for oil leaks.

thanks for the replys gentelmen....i will take a look at all of that in the morning

ss.slp.ls1....there does not seem to be any smoke coming out of the hood area (of course i just may not see it) and definitly has not been any coming into the cab...the only smoke i have seen comes from behind the car.

as for the smoke when i really get on it...it seems like it is a bit of a darker color. i have had the pcm flashed but it still needs to be put on the dyno to iron out the tune, so it still runs really rich most of the time....would you guys say it is safe to write this smoke off as running rich?

anyhow if it is the case that this is just a leak i am effing relieved that it isnt burning AND leaking.

When you said smoking, I wasn't sure if you meant that it was smoking out of the exhaust pipe. If it is then its probably not oil dripping onto the exhaust. Sorry if I misunderstood.

yeah....i was just wanting to make it as clear as possible in case there was room for misunderstanding (i realize that i wasnt as detailed as i could/should have been at first). now...is there any possibility that the oil could be dripping onto the exhaust and kinda getting caught up under the car....coming out of the back when i start accelerating up the ramp? i know that may be grasping at straws...but ya know....i would much rather replace something i can do myself than hear i may need new rings or something along those lines

Checking for leaks can never hurt.
