budget rebuild, need some help???
just found out that my daily driver is shot. the motor is gone, the valves are bent and the cam was ground because the cam belt(???) broke and i tried cranking it on. guy says that i need a new motor, so now i have both my trans am and my daily driver that need new motors. the motor from the t/a just spun a bearing and i found water in oil when i took off the valve covers. im thinking of going with a running used motor but i dont know how long it will last. or go with a budget rebuild, but i have no idea where to look or what way to go. as of right now i have about $180 and another $250 on friday when i get paid. i'll prolly sell the Z06 rims off my trans am for another $750 and i have some 15x3.5 prostars that i have laying around. im guessing my total budget for the rebuild is about $1000 and my friends will help out with everything i need except machining which i will need for the block. need some suggestions on which way to go? i have no idea what to do, any help is greatly appreciated
Re: budget rebuild, need some help???
You must mean the timing chain broke. No internal belts on these motors.
My advice is to call Daryl at RPM (Sponsor here) and tell him what you're looking for and what your budget it. He builds some great LT1 shortblocks and can probably work something out to fit your budget and will still be better than a "remanufactured" engine.

Re: budget rebuild, need some help???
my bad, guess i didnt explain my self. i meant that my daily driver(dodge avenger) broke the timing belt and messed up all the valvetrain and he told me the cam was ground a little. i just pulled out the old summit mag that i had and i saw the speed pro kit for like $600. i was thinking maybe ill just see if i can reuse the crank, rods, and just machine the block. then throw everything together along with the xe230/236 cam again, or should i go back to the stock cam. im gonna need my car as a daily driver, but i dont mind the gas or the fact that it has no a/c. guess i cant justify buying another daily driver for the reason that i just paid $1700 for a car i used two months and now im in the same shoes again. i should have just rebuilt the motor in my trans am.
