Bronze Distributor Gear Life?

What is the expected life of a bronze gear? I went through one in about 1000 miles.

Comp Cams seems to be a failure of a company and gave me a billet cam with the wrong cam gear. I've eaten a stock gear and now a bronze gear. I don't really want to pull the cam out at this point, but swaping distributor gears every 1000 miles is a bit rediculous considering I have a direct port on top of my manifold.

What other options are there? Composite gears aren't available in the small size for our oil pump shafts.
