Yes since that drives the waterpump. Kinda like if you didnt have a driveshaft you wouldnt be moving much.

Your water pump will not work with that broken.

Lol, sorry but I have to say it....

DUH!!!

Nothing personal, just sounded like the perfect time for a "duh."

And yeah... go ahead and replace the water pump sence you have it off... I have not yet owned a car that I have not had to do a water pump on. When I bought this car the other week I said to myself, I should just go ahead and put a water pump in, cause i know it's gonna go. Sure enough, it went the next week as I was headed to work.... lol. Just my luck.

You kinda have to ask yourself "Why did it break?". It's not a common occurence. In fact, I think it is the first one I have seen. Maybe the pump bound up and caused it.

Good point as well. There's a "DUH" on my part for not thinking of that. Lol.

Can you spin the water pump by hand?

I would do it anyway. Could still be a bad bearing that only sticks under a certain load or at a certain time. Just go ahead and do it while you have it out.

What condition is the drive protruding from the timing cover in? Is that still intact? If not, it would be a good idea to replace that too. That would require removal of the intake and timing cover to get the WP gear drive out which actually is quite simple. Not trying to scare you, but just reassurance.
