Broken Pan Bolts HELP ASAP!!!

Alright I have about 3 of my pan bolts, he little ones on my LT1 pan and they have broken into the block and is causing my pan gasket to leak rapidly. Now how can I get these out, I don't need to remove the engine, just want to know how to remove the broken studs or a quick fix. These are 3/8 and would it work to use JB weld and weld the top back on it and then see if it will unscrew or drop the K-Member and drill and re tap them? Just let me know what you think thanks alot for any input.

Just get a drill extractor, if not, pull the engine.

Drop the pan and get an easy out. If there is any part of the bolt that you can get with a pair of "vice grips" brand name, then you can remove the bolts. If you are really careful you can take a small angled chisel and lightly hammer the bolts counterclock wise until get enough to grab them with the V grips. But, as mentioned, if you can't get
hold of them you will need to use an easyout.

Don't mess with a half A$$ fix. Take'm out and install with all new ones: you cannont afford to lose your oil. JMHO

Also, I wouldn't advise trying to use the easyout without dropping the pan lest you damage the pan or the bolt holes in doing so.

Pan is off and I have plenty of clearance, the bolt isn't sticking out far enough to grap with anything and its almost even with the block so would JB weld work? I can't pull the engine and if an easy out would work where could I get one? Could I rent one at autozone?

Take a bolt with you if you can or just make sure you know the diameter/size. Go to local auto shop, machine shop, power rents, hardware store, home depot, etc. Get an "easyout" for the size you need. Get the "hardened" drill bit that is recommed for that easy out.

It is preferred to use a variable speed drill so that you have better control while you make your hole for the easyout.

Back'em out and DON'T torque them too much when you are reinstalling (they are not that big and don't need to be torqed too much. Good Luck.

If you can go to Autozone, they will have everything you need. No. do not use JB Weld. Do it right.

Well I have a drill and drill bits, so if I get the easy out what exactly do I do when I get it? (Never used one before)

Use a bolt extractor, they work really well. JB weld will just be a waste of time. Make sure you use a punch to dimple the center of the bolt. This keeps the drill bit from walking when you are getting started. Take your time to ensure you keep the hole centered in the bolt to avoid tearing up the threads. Using some 3in1 oil as you drill will keep the bit sharp. There is no need to drill all the way through the bolt, about 1/4" deep should be fine.

As has been suggested in the past, using a reverse twist drill bit may actually spin it out before it even gets completely drilled.

That should work.

None of that worked, the extractor with reverse bits didnt even phase it. I just have a big hole in it now. If it's just one bolt that is missing think it will do any damage or leak if I have some RTV in that area?

Re: Broken Pan Bolts HELP ASAP!!!

As I SAID: Drill it and use an "easyout". The part about making a dimple before you drill, etc. is good advice. But that is what easyouts are for. I have plenty experience in getting out headless bolts. Take it for what it is worth.
