I'm running a BRE cam spec'ed at 23X/24X and .59X"/.59X" with Comp 918s and one snapped yesterday at idle. The top coil broke in two places. Thankfully, the valve did not drop into the cylinder. Needless to say, I'm looking for a new set of springs to handle this cam reliably. What has everyone had luck with when running fast ramp rates and high lift? I'll be running the engine up to 6500 RPM.

 

I had good luck with the 977s using a BRE grind.
I'm going with Patriot Gold Extreme this time around.
Both have plenty of seat pressure and will handle .600+ lift.

 

I would think the Crane 10308-1 kit (99893 springs) would work as well. Just make sure your installed height is 1.80 (+-.01).

 

I would use the Patriot Gold Extreme spring kit set up at 1.780.

You will have 155 lbs on the seat and 400 lbs open and still able to handle a .630 lift cam without coil binding.

Thats what I am running. Very good springs and able to control agressive cam profiles.

 

PAC 1518's are good for 0.650 @ 1.80(I think that's right). My understanding is that they used to make the 918's for Comp until Comp went somewhere else for them.....and guess what.....that's when Comp started snapping springs left and right.

 

That's what I'll go with. Thanks for the help folks! Too bad Comp won't take any responsibility for their junk springs.

 

they have actually replaced numerous sets with the new and improved 918 springs these ones are good to .625 lift as well

Approximately when did comp stop using these guys? I have the comp 918s (bought ~2 years ago). Should I be worried about spring failure?

That just about makes everything I have had from comp turn sour in some way or another. Will be checking these this weekend. Shon, sending you a PM bro.

 

Much easier to solve problems if you admit what caused them.

 

To eliminate any mistakes I may have made in this process, I double checked the installed height on the springs and made sure that the rocker wear mark was in the center of the valve. Everything checked out. These springs are spec'ed to handle the cam I am using and the engine has not been taken to redline even once. I can't see any other root cause besides bad hardware.
