Question Brass plug where temp sensor should be

Hi all,

I have a 1994 Z28 which I had to replace the heads on as the last owner mollested all of the the manifold bolt holes. Anyway. I bought a set of used heads off of ebay that were supposedly off of a 1995 lt1 corvette and had no problems installing them accept for one thing.

Where the temperature sensor was on my old heads there is now what seems to be a brass "plug" which has a hole that is perfectly square and measured with a micrometer seems to be 5/16". I have tried ratchets of sizes 3/8" and 1/4" and neither fit. And no the hole is not hex, it is square - four sides.

I assume I need to get that thing out of there somehow so I can screw in a temp sensor. If anybody has any ideas on what/why that thing is there and how to get it out....preferably some type of tool I would be highly appreciative. Thanks a bunch.

Snapon makes the tool. Good luck. I fought for 2 days to get mine out. It gets frozen in there. I had to drill it out and retap the threads after my ordeal. GO SLOW, that is all I can say. [edit]

It has some sort of locktite on it.
I went to the hardware and got a piece of square key stock the right size, heated it(plug not the head) up with a cutting torch and put the keystock in and a crescent wrench and out it came.

You could probably find one at a NAPA store. Sears sells a set of them in the SK brand (kinda pricey, though).

Be sure to check the other head on the passenger side, it has the same hole for a temp sending unit and it might be open. If so you'll need to plug it.

I heated mine up too, with no luck. For what its worth, you need to heat the head up, not the plug. When you heat the plug up it expands, and makes it worse. If you heat the head up, the hole gets just a hair bigger... But any way you go about it sucks dude.
