Brake line questions
Brake line questions
I plan to install a braided brake line kit on my vehicle. I have seen kits from earls, russel and from tire rack.com. Can anyone recommend a particlar kit or are thay all basically the same. I have just installed new rotors and pads. The install looks preety staight forward, my concern is - when i disconnent the line from the rotor is there anything special that needs to be accomplised other than bleeding each rotor and not to run the container dry?
I believe the braided lines at Tire Rack are made by Goodridge. Both Earl's and Goodridge are quality products. The install is not difficult. New crush washers should be installed with new brake lines. Bleed your brakes after installing new lines, starting with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder and working to the wheel closest to it. If you plan to ever upgrade to LS1 brakes, you should get a set for 98 or later. And get a big bottle of brake fluid.
Thanks Bud M, good info. I think I will go with the earls hyperfirm kit. I am hoping the crush washers com with the kit. One last question If I keep the fluid full while bleeding - is the abs unit a concern-Should I bleed that as well? Thanks again

If I recall Earl's is a 5 line kit, Russell's is a 4 line kit..
Earl's came with the washers..
Only other thing I recall was the fifth line[on the rear gear housing] was hard to get the old one OFF.. almost ruined it!Soak em good with PB Blawster..

I put the Earl's on my 96Z. It has five hoses and all necessary hardware. It made a noticable difference in the break feel (firmer). The first time I blead only the wheel cylinders and had a very low pedal. The book recomends bleeding the ABS hydraulic modulator first. First the Rear ABS Bleeder then the Front ABS Bleeder (This is called Priming the ABS hydraulic modulator). After this go to the furthest wheel, Right Rear, Left Rear, Right Front then Left Front. After that I had no problems.
Sometimes even break free won't help on a frozen brake line. Make sure you use B-nut wrenches on the lines or you can easily round off the nuts.
I also used the Earl's kit. They do come with crush washers.
I have a complete write-up on my experience on my Cardomain webpage in my sig. I ended up replacing an entire brake line because i couldn't get a b-nut loose with ANYTHING and ended up cutting it off.
Yet another day job turned into an entire weekend.
