I posted up a lot in the LT1 section about Cats, resonantors and dynatech cones because my Long tubed no cat borla combo sounded like ***..

it sounded like *** cuz borla has a glass pack design so its less restrictive giving it a more open header/un tuned sound..
Plus I had that open plate in there (smallest open plate) and part of the exhaust completely bypassed the muffler so it had that annoying aweful rasp.
Sounded great at idle and at wide open throttle but inbetween and part throttle sucked.

So after much research i decided to put carsound cats on my car. They are 3inch carsound cats that i bought off ebay for 31 bucks each. I had them welded on for 75 bucks.
I no longer smell like gas when i get out of my car and most importantly that aweful rasp is gone and the car sounds good again.
only come in 2.5 and 3 inch sizes. There was a study done on carsound vs stock vs randomtech and carsound was barely barely behind dynatech's cat but much cheaper.
basically 2 2.5 inch cats on a ypipe can support around 360rwhp without any power loss.. a 3inch came to over 400rwhp without any power loss if i remember right..

Zdriver96,
Glad you got that figured out and are happy with it. Putting the FLP cats in my cousins car was our solution too.

Tanker, I feel your pain and your not the first to complain about Borla+LT+ORP=SHEIIIIIIIK!!!

I had borla and it was ok until I put my LTs on too. Needless to say, I sold it as fast as I could. I just love the sound now with the Hooker cat-back. Its what I should have bought in the first place. Just can't justify more than $350 for a cat-back now.

Personally I can't stand the sound of Magnaflow. I've heard it on an LT1 and LS1 with headers and both times it was high pitched and poppy at upper RPMS... doesn't have a muscle car sound at all, more like a V6 IMO

Just letting people know who are in the market for exhaust system- don't ever buy borla exhaust if you are planning to put long tube headers without cats, sound is just horible, regardless of how you adjust the pressure plates. Since I have an electric cutout, I tried every combination, no luck. At 2000-3000 rpm's car has back popping if I let of gas, and has horible- high piched shrieking, nothing close like a muscle car should sound. Tomas
That's not what I wanted to hear. I've had my Borla for 4 years now with Edelbrock shorties and the car sounds bad-***, even better after I installed the Hot cam. I've just ordered the JetHot LT's. This thread has me worried a bit. Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait and see. I've heard various sound-clips from LT1's with that combo and they sounded wicked to me We'll see....

FLP LT, dual cats, and Borla with 1" plate sounds really wicked, with none of the popping or harley sound.

As mentioned in the previous post, high flowing cats (carsound, random tech) will not handicap your car like some have suggested, but will mellow the raspiness and limit the popping to whenthe car is cold.

I will try putting a cone and a bullet muffler, just to see if some claims made by some board members are true. Yes I will do both since I already have a bullet mufler from my dual exhaust and I have a welder.

If you have popping, it is not the fault of the exhaust system. You are probably running rich and the popping is the unburned gas igniting. I had the same problem before I had my programming optimized. I have FLP's with the Borla and I have no popping with cats or the off road pipes. Running rich, lean, or right on all will affect the sound of the exhaust. Wings is a good example, his sounds good, but not better than mine. I'm also faster than he is.

Well.......catalytic convertors DO hurt performance

I've got magnaflow and jet hots on my car. It sounds like a mustang to me, but with my old setup it sounded kinda like a pile of sh8t. The old setup had edelbrock shortys, hot cam, with the magnaflow out the back.
