Borla cat-back, what do you think?
Borla cat-back, what do you think?
Ive been looking at cat-back exhaust systems for my bone stock 1996 Z28 that I bought recently and after hearing my brothers 94' Z28 with a borla kit on it i know thats what i want. It sounds amazing. But on the right tailpipe it has a tunable plate. My first question is that i know that this is there for power and sound tuning but for a car like mine which is bone stock, what plate should i use to get the best sound but not sacrifice any power? Obviously they range from fully closed to fully open with different levels inbetween that. And also what do you guys think of the kit overall? Any good or bad qualities that you have heard?
Re: Borla cat-back, what do you think?
Their ok, would never buy one new though, they havent gotten ridiculous in price, I remember back in 99 when they cost 579$ I thought that was to much, now they are way more than that.
Re: Borla cat-back, what do you think?
on my car, i run all the plates, even wide open plate. but normally i just leave the smallest open plate in there. really up to you...just seems when i run the open plate i loose alot of backpressure, therefore i get alot of pops.
in my opinion, i think the smallest plate sounds good

Basicly the more you have it open, the more power, but the louder it is. The more closed you have it, the quieter it is, but less power. But again, if you have it all the way open, its just a $750 cutout.

Are you running Borla?
Re: Borla cat-back, what do you think?
nope, im running just a stock exhaust right now. it has a cutout in it but it pulls timing when i open it so i just leave it closed. that is one good thing about the borla... it will move the vibrations farther away from the engine so it wont create as much false knock.
Re: Borla cat-back, what do you think?
BTW, I'm not saying I don't like the Borla exhaust. I think it sounds good and looks good as well. I'm just saying it way too much money for what it is. I can get the same sound and look with a much less expensive cat back and put some nice lookin tips on it.

Thanks ill keep that in mind. How does the magnaflow kit compare to this one? In your opinion, any of you out there, what else is a good kit. Instead of me rambling off of the major names tell me what you guys like or what you run yourselves.
Re: Borla cat-back, what do you think?
$350 used borla here too, i bought an LS1 system on ebay, and bolted it up to my 96 no problem. i did buy the $30 SLP loudmouth install kit though, its the two rear exhaust hangers that make everything bolt up the way it should. a little loud, but sounds very good open, since i didnt get the plates, as im anxiously awaiting my DMH.
i thought for 350 used it was the best bang for the buck in terms of being stainless, looks amazing, built in cutout, and sounds good through the muffler too.

Re: Borla cat-back, what do you think?
I used to have a Magnaflow muffler. Last week I installed a used Borla catback.
The Borla is definately deeper than the Magnaflow was. The Magnaflow was raspier. I have only run the closed plate so far, and with everything running through the muffler I have no complaints. The volume is perfect for a daily driver, quiet at cruise, and loud at WOT. I think its actually a tad louder than my magnaflow was. Once exams are over, I'll finally get around to testing the various plates.
I only had the muffler, but I have a few friends with Magnaflow catbacks and I can say this... The Magnaflow kit is nice, but you definately get what you pay for. The stainless that the Borla is constructed of is a much higher quality metal, and the craftsmanship that went into the exchaust is also better. Then again it ought to be for an exhaust system that costs twice as much brand new. Dont get me wrong, the magnaflow is a nicely constructed kit, (nicer than flowmaster and hooker IMO) but I wouldnt compare it to the Borla.
Performance aside, neither muffler sounds as man to me as my Flowmaster did. That muffler snarled. The Borla however is the last exhaust which will ever go on my car.
BTW, my old muffler is for sale cheap if anyone wants it.
