This weekend header install has turned into a nightmare. Here is the problem. Driver side exhaust manifold bolt is half busted off in the head. It is the 2nd last one closest to the firewall and is a pita to get at. I am going to try and use a bolt extractor to get it out. I bought a 90 degree drill adapter to get at it which barely gives me enough room to get down in there at it. Hopefully this will work. Anybody know what i should do if this does not work? will i have to get new heads? Is there some kind of other special tool that might work??Is it safe to just use the 5 bolts in the header temporarly?

 

i pulled a broke bolt out of a heads with and exrator. but just be sure and buy a good one dont buy a cheap one, because they break to. and its a pain in the butt to get those out. drill the hole in the bolt half the size of the diameter of the bolt. say if the bolt is 1/4" in diameter then drill a 1/8" hole for the exrtator.

and dont run just five bolts

 

Be very careful with the extractor, because if you break it in the bolt, you'll have an even bigger nightmare trying to drill it out....

Hey also a good idea is to center punch the middle of the broken bolt to help center your drill(if you can). Check your new headers I know that some of them use the very last bolt hole(un-used from the factory manifolds) I have heard of people just leaving the broken bolt in there and just covering it up with the header and gasket. Good luck man and dont forget to take a brake and walk away when you get tired or frustrated, it pays to work with a fresh head.. ~~~rob

I know you won't want to here this, but you can pull the head off and heat the area around the bolt with a torch. the alum will heat up faster then the steel bolt. you can melt wax on and around the bolt and try use the easy out. you have to be careful not to over head the as it won't change color as steel will...
