Boaring out maf
Boaring out maf
I see some people have listed in there mods bored out maf so I talked to the guys in the machine shop at work and they told me they could do it no problem just bring it in. My question is is it just as simple as take it apart bore it out put it back together and now you are making 10 more hp? If so how big can you take it and is it just like buying one of the $350 aftermarket ones? Has anyone had any problems with this? Thanks for any help.
Re: Boaring out maf
just pull the screen out and call it good. There is not enought to be had from porting it. This topic has been covered a gzillion times so you can find a lot of factual information by searching the forum.
Re: Boaring out maf
once someone such as your self starts tuning it you will wish you wouldnt have. it a sensor dont mess with. i did and then i put a stock one in. you will not gain a thing by it.
Re: Boaring out maf
the thing about pulling out the screen is hit or miss. For some it hurts them for others (like me) it helps. If it don't work for you. just put it back in. All you have to do is pull out the c-clip and take out the screen. You put it back in the same way. Worth a shot.
Re: Boaring out maf
I pulled my screen out a long time ago. That is one of the first things I did to the car back in '94.
For kicks, about a year ago I tried to reinstall. Motor ran horrible, pulled it back out.
Supposedly the screen straightens out the airflow for the sensor, but it is a restriction to higher airflow, especially with a supercharger.
I may polish the existing maf housing while its off the car. This would help the flow a little bit. That center wing is in there to keep the flow laminar prior to entering the motor, it is shaped like the back of an airplane wing. Do not remove it.

Re: Boaring out maf
the thing about the screen is it will only straighten out the air where it is at the time it gets to the screen. I have k&n cai, and the air is traveling up then makes an angled turn toward the tb. so it seems like to me the air hits the top of the cai and then goes through the maf. I think the majority of the air is going throught the maf at the top so it shouldn't matter if the screen is in or out. This may be way off it just seems to make sense in my head.
Re: Boaring out maf
I assume that the screen straightens out the air so that the MAF element is getting a good sample to reflect the amount of air being introduced at that point. If the engine was requiring more air than a 48MM TB could handle, then I suppose one would do what was necessary to increase the available volume. The PCM is calibrated with the stock maf and any modification with the air flow by honing it out or disturbing the air flow will probably mess with the pcm until it re learns by adjusting the injectors.
JMO, but until it can be demonstrated that fooling with the MAF will provide substantial increase in performance that leaving it stock is your best course of non-action.
but...it's your mouth: you can haul coal in it if your want to.
