Question blown 383...

Ok i have a few questions here...first of of all, what is the compression on a 383? Because the lower the compression the better it is for boost right? And also is a 383 a good engine to have forced induction on? Im thinking about getting a 383 stroker with a procharger on it and i was just wondering if this would be a good setup? If not do you guys have any suggestions? Also what would it run me to rebuild my 350 to a 383 for all of you that have done it. Or would it just be better to just buy a new one.

Thanks, Zack

383's don't come in a specific compression, that is all based on the pistons you get and how your heads are set up (gaskets, porting, etc.)

You can make a 383 anything you want with the right machine work, gaskets, heads, cam and pistons. Do the math.

Re: blown 383...

I am starting a 357 ci LT1 buildup for forced induction. I am planning on running about 15 to 18 ounds of boost and with my head and piston combo, I should have about 8.5 to 1 compression. That is right where I wanted to keep it at, so I think that it will fit me pretty well. If you start looking at some of the piston sites like www.jepistons.com and www.diamondracing.net, they have charts that show you about what compression your motor would have with a 3.75 inch stroke, 5.7 inch rod and whatever piston/cylinder head cc combo that you are wanting to use. SStrokerAce may jump in here since he is an engine builder an give you some advice but just search on here and check out how some of the other guys are doing their combos and it can give you an idea. Oh, and you will probably also hear to keep your cylinder over-bore to a minimum, like only go over .10 or .20. It keeps the cylinder walls thicker which you will want for a FI motor. I chose to still go with a .30 over bore since my car is just a garage baby, sunny day car. It will hardly ever see any track use but if I was building one for the strip, I would have used a .10 over bore.
