Unhappy Blowing Coolant out with cap off??

I had a thread going about my meziere electric pump but it was getting too long and I figured noone would want to read all the way through.

Anyway, after trying different thermostats and getting my electrip WP spinning in the right direction I decided to try a different approach. The car will stabilize its temp at about 190-195F at idle, as soon as you put any load on the motor as in turning on the ac or holding the rpms at 1500 or above and the temp gets up to 210F it starts blowing coolant out of the radiator if I leave the cap off. Then of course the temp just keeps rising higher and higher. I would almost certainly think this was a blown head gasket or cracked head but why does it only do this under load above 210F and not all the time? I can rev the crap out of the car even at 180F, well after the 160 thermostat has opened up and no spewing at all. I just put the heads back on a week ago and if I don't have to pull both of them that would be great. I'm thinking a compression test wouldn't show this as it only happens above 210F, but of course I could be wrong. Anyone have any advice as to where I should start?

Re: Blowing Coolant out with cap off??

Just for some added info, I bought the .039 thickness fel-pro gaskets and new arp head bolts. I torqued the heads down in 3 steps, I think it was 25-45-65ft/lbs and I used a diagram I found on this board to torque them in the right order. I was sold the wrong style temperature sending unit for the drivers side head. I installed it and found out the plug wouldnt fit, so I pulled it out and found the correct one then reinstalled it. Could I have broken the inside of the head from screwing in the wrong sensor? The first one I tried was the same sensor that goes in the front of the water pump housing.

first the coolant is going to come out at those temps with the cap off. The cap is there for a reason. Are your fans coming on? Take a look at your oil see if its sludged. What temp are your fans set to come on? does it only get this hot when at idle or does it do it all the time?

The coolant isn't just coming out its blowing out about 8-10 inches into the air and violently sloshing around in the radiator. Brand new motor, so brand new oil, 25 miles on it. Fans come on at 180F, and it only does it once the car is under load, at idle it will stabilize at 190-195F, and by load I mean turning on the ac or just driving around normally. And it does this consistently. I'm gonna pull it all apart tonight or tomorrow, I'm pretty sure its a bad head gasket, baffles me as to why though, everything is brand new.

Do a cooling system pressure test and see if it will hold pressure.Do this warm with the plugs out and full of water, then spin the motor over and see if a mist comes out any hole.It is possible to have compression going into the rad and no water getting into engine. Then look at all the plugs,if any water got to one it will be clean and white or a different color than the rest. If that don't tell, then warm your car, pull the plugs, and do a compression test and a leak down test one of these will tell ya. If not pull both heads and ya will find it and ya may get lucky and find it on the first head.
Did ya torque to 65 with ARP molly lube? if not they are not tight enough.
No chance of the sensor hurting the head(don't think)
No easy way to tell,ya just have to keep doing different checks until ya find it,or rip it apart and see,and figure out why it happened to prevent it from happening again.

Stupid question but did you remember to open the two bleed
valves when you were filling the radiator?

Try this method. Its what I use with the CSI pump I have and never had a problem.

First you need to open up those 2 brass bleed screws and turn the pump on w/o starting the motor. Basically you just let the coolant circulate thru the motor and rad.

Eventually coolant will start to spill out of hte bleed screws so you close them. The bleed screw closest to the radiator will cause the radiator to overflow and when that happens you need to shut that bleed screw. I noticed the screw closest to the waterpump will actually start to drip coolant and thats when you close it. This ensures all the air gets out of the system. Youll notice bubbles coming out of the radiator and out of that return line that connects right at the top of the radiator by the cap.

Continue filling the radiator till the level stops falling.

Put the cap back on and youre done.

The water is probably starting to boil. Are you reading 210 on the gauge or via a scanner. The gauge on the dash can read 20* cooler. The cap alows the system to run under pressure and increases the Boiling point.

Why are you running it without the radiator cap on anyway?
