My 94 Z-28 rolls out black smoke at WOT. It is stock with only free mods and a homemade cai. It otherwise, runs good and knocks down 18 mpg in the city. It does smell a little rich at times. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or should I take it and have it scanned?

More importantly with it dumping enough fuel to cause a black cloud all the way down the track, how much power could this be costing me. It has ran a best of 14.10 in the heat, but I want to break into the thirteens before I put headers on it.

 

make sure its black amock and not blue smoke. But to answer your question black smoke would indicate a rich condition, however it shouldnt be so heavy that you cant see your car from behind. If so you have other problems.

 

lol...I realize that the black smoke indicates a rich condition. My friend that was watching from the grandstands swears that it was black. I could see it in the mirrors, but could not be sure as to the color.

I guess what I was looking for, is there any known causes for the car to run that rich at WOT.

 

Every Lt1 car ive seen including mine runs rich at WOT-Nothing to worry about...Normal thing from what ive seen...
