When my 02 sensors went out, it just ran like crud and didn't throw a SES light or code.

I think its kinda funny that you guys are complaining about carbon buildup on your exhaust tips. People never tail gate me any more because my car is so rich. One guy was following me in a cruise and never got more than 4-5 cars close to me because the smell of fuel was so strong. That and a friend of mine was complaining that his eyes were burning at a stop light. That same friend also saw me shoot flames out the tail pipes. Just imagine what residue it left on my car.

See, thats what i was reffering to. at a light or a stop I swear the smell is so strong it will make your eyes tear!!!!! hahahaha so I guess my question is can the o2 sensors cause it to run like crap??????? how did yours run KAIN???

I still have the same problem and Ive replaced both sensors. It got a little better when I replaced the o2's, but it still runs really rich. If you've never replaced the O2's, its probably a good time to do it, but also check for exhaust leaks around your headers/manifolds and around the intake elbow area.

Are you sure the smell you get at the light is from the exhaust? It could be from the tank vent system, if the hoses to the carbon canister are rotted.

If its running rich at idle and part load, you have something telling the PCM to add fuel that the engine doesn't need. That could be a sign of failing O2 sensors, but it could also be the result of exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors, or misfires. Both of these conditions cause the O2 sensors to report a "false lean" condition, and the PCM adds fuel that isn't needed.

If your SES light is coming on intermittantly, why haven't you had it scanned? That might tell you exactly what the problem is. Even if the SES light goes off, the code for the problem stays stored in the PCM for a reasonable period of time.

A scan would also show you the "long term fuel corrections". In an engine with a "false lean", these will generally be elevated well above the "normal" value of 128. When they reach the upper limit (160) it will set a code in the PCM and turn on the SES light. You can see where a good "scan" would help diagnose your problem.

This also ties into the "runs good cold, runs like crap hot" problem. When its goes into closed loop (hot), the O2 sensors start altering the long term fuel corrections. And, you also need to look at things that can be harmed by excessive heat, or deteriorate to the point where heat causes a problem - ICM module, Opti optical sensor, coil, plug wire insulation, etc.

Step 1 - get it scanned.
