Biggest cam with unported heads?

I think my girl is gonna buy me a cam for my Christmas present, how pimp is that? Anyway, I don't have the $$$ for ported or AFR heads, so what is the biggest cam I can run on heads with stock ports. I want the cam to run to its potential, so I don't need an 847 or cc306. Anyone have any reccomendations? I can get springs and cut the guide towers for clearance, that's not a problem.

I would suggest a CC305 instead of the 306, the 306 may be a little too much for you. Also, you didn't say if you car is a 6spd or auto. If it is an auto, you may need to think about a stall. The guy that works on my car installed a CC305 in a 1995 Z with an automatic. The only other mods were long tubes, exhaust and some bolt on's and the car went 12.60's. So it is a pretty good cam.

Go CC306, you guys talk about .570 lift like its sooo huge.

Buddies car has a .730lift cam, and thats a little too big for the street

he may see better gains with something smaller since he's retaining stock castings.

The bigger cams still go faster and make more peak and area under the curve.

I have heard that the 306 is ok for the street with a good tune, but you won't be reaching its potential with the stock heads. That's why I was thinking of either a hotcam, CC305, or a 224/230. It's a 6 speed with 3.42 gears. I don't want a super-fast car, this is my street car, just need something to give it a good wake up!

the cc305 is a good streetable cam with decent power. That's what I'm running. But, if I had it all to do over again, I would go with one of the comp extreme energy series cams because they have new and better lobe design technology (the cc305 and cc306 are VERY old technology with less aggressive ramp rates). I would recommend the 224/230 for you. I wouldn't recommend going with one of those big cams like some say because you will just lose driveability and will be held back by your heads.

Your best bet is to talk to one of the guys on this board who design cams. A custom cam will get you a lot closer to your needs than an off the shelf cam. The highest hp stock headed cars i have seen were all custom cams. I don't think they are all to much more money than an off the shelf either.

Yea, that is a very good question, if you do go to something big like the 306 or 847 you will need to rev it to 6500 to get all the power out of the cam. I myself am planing to go with a 847 ans stock heads untill i can have them ported, ****, look at altjar, he's runing 11.98 with stock heads and that cam.

Basically a stump puller cam.

Easy to tune. Very mild idle.
