I'll bet birds fall out of the sky and grass withers on the side of the road too

I'm guessing that more duration has a more negative effect on emmissions than lift does? Or am I out of my mind...... ?

Yes, duration and lobe seperation has a huge effect. The higher the duration and lower the LSA the more overlap (period when both intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time).

Steve...

Your cam is extremely similar to mine I want to pass emissions soon, think I can do it?

Bunker, I'm afraid the emmissions testing guy might pass out from CO poisoning before being able to hook up the test equipment to your car

what has the greatest affect on hydrocarbons? This was the back breaker for me and even a cat had no affect on these numbers.

I dont think its the extra dicplacement that is allowing these cars to pass the emissions test. I think alot of it has to do with the amount of overlap, and especially the tune. Without a good and a I mean good emissions tune, your not going to pass, or will barely pass. The carb guys used to do this by added a cat (not a high flow) and buy leaning out the carb. So you need to get a good tuner to lean out your tune so your not running rich in those tests.

Believe me when I say I was extremely lean. Perhaps too lean to be driving the car around for any prolonged period.

Hydrocarbons are generally too high due to unburnt fuel or oil getting into the exhaust chambers. You are either running way too rich or got some bad rings allowing oil in...but if you were burning oil you'd probably have noticed it by now. Rich condition is usually caused by cam overlap causing a false lean condition to be sensed by the O2 sensors.

Just swap in the stock cam when emissions time comes aorund.... sure its alotta work, but then you can run a 360/360 .999/.999 (well maybe not that big ) cam the rest of the year or two. We get 2 years between checks as long as you pass your first test. You fail a first attempt they call you back the next year.

You can pass with tuning and tricks up to a limit.

I've passed with the lpe 219 cam, and a 230-236 114 lsa cam with no tricks, just a cat.

I will try and pass with my current cam which is 242-254 110 lsa, but it will take some tricks. There is a guy around here that was gonna let me use his 4-gas analyzer to do some tuning, and I'm sure I will have to use some denatured alcohol to pass.

Retarding the initial timing will reduce HC's along with adding 9-10 bottles of heet brand dry gas/gas line antifreeze, which is basically methyl alcohol I think.

Re: Bigger cam guys: Tell me what cam you have and if it passed emmissions or not.

Well, I live in cali(bay area) so we have SMOG 2 I believe which is the roller dyno/plug into OBD port. I have a 230/236 112 LSA cam. You would think as I did that it would fail. Well I waited a year and never smogged the car even after the reg expired(I paid the dues though) cause I've read on this board about how it will fail and blah blah blah. Well I take it to a Test only center this past wednesday cause my reg was due on Jan 10. It was a total accident that I took it there cause the damn TEST ONLY center sign was so small. So anyway I go in thinking damn I'm going to fail but I need to get the smog so I can start recieving DMV papers (they stop sending you stuff if you dont do SMOG). Well low and behold the damn thing passes and passes clean. I was going to start a new thread saying this but wasn't sure if people wanted to know this information. I have the SMOG cert sitting in the car right now need to get it scanned. The SMOG tech failed me though for the headers...I've never had a problem before but this is the first time I accidentally took it to a test only center. Anway I go back home call Air Resources Board and find the EO number on their website and call to confirm the number. I print out the pdf and go back to the SMOG center and pass with flying colors. I'm now thinking how much bigger can I go and still pass SMOG. I think the reason I passed is cause they did a 15 and 20 MPH test and no IDLE test(?). I'm not a SMOG expert but I don't give a damn cause I passed SMOG. Oh this is on a completely and I mean completely stock tune. The car does have a high rpm miss and some Knock retard(this is a guess). If you need more information let me know...sorry for the long post, I was just excited I passed.

Re: Bigger cam guys: Tell me what cam you have and if it passed emmissions or not.

I have a 383 running a CC XE 230/236 (3315/3316 Lobes) .544/.555 lift, and I can not pass using my everyday tune. I installed a Smog only tune and pass with flying colors. I only live a few miles from the test facility and I drive it like a little old lady until I get my Daily Driver tune back in it.

It can be done.

I also have to test in Ca in the next couple of weeks. I'm running a blown 385 with 228/236 511/533 113 lsa cam . I figure with the blower I should pass but I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks.
