Best way to custom tune
Best way to custom tune
Ok, I have a 1993 Z and am installing a new cam soon along with and adjustable AFPR. What are my tuning options and what are your opinions on them?
I would think the best way would be to set the AFPR on a Dyno to find the optimum pressure. Then use the recorded dyno results to send to a tuner to have a custom chip made based on the dyno results. I don't think I'd be happy with a typical mail order tune were you just tell someone what you have and hope they guess the best they can to make things work. I know it'll be better than a stock tune, but there's a lot more to get out of a tune.
Do I make sense? How would I get this done?

Re: Best way to custom tune
If your fuel injectors are sized right for your power level, there's no need to run anything but the stock fuel pressure. An adjustable fuel pressure regulator is a crutch for having too small fuel injectors for your power level; I should know, I finally wised up and bought some 75 lbers.
Re: Best way to custom tune
Pretty much. AFPR should not be used to tune they make changes to the whole fuel curve as opposed to adjusting just what needs adjusting all you will accomplish with it is making the chip burners job much harder.
Re: Best way to custom tune
Tuning your car with the mods you have will be a walk in the park. Ask some people who have done dyno days with me. My mail order is typically less than 5hp of the dyno tune.
Re: Best way to custom tune
From what I understand a AFPR is a good tuning tool for a speed density car, I just want to make sure I squeeze everything I can out of the car.
Rooster, I've heard and seen nothing but good things about you over the years here and at the speeddensity board. I'll be getting in touch with you as soon as the cam is in.

Re: Best way to custom tune
I wouldn't reccomend a AFPR at all as a tuning tool. If your 1 point rich on the dyno and you lean it out.. are you sure that its right to run that much leaner at part throttle and idle?
I appreciate the good words.

Re: Best way to custom tune
I see what you're saying. I figured I'd use it to gain a little HP that way, but if a tune will do it, and do it better then that's what I'll do. How or when is it time to use an AFPR?
