I agree that Thunder has great pricing on the full kits.

I would recommend you step up to the Deluxe install kit which includes new axle bearings and seals as well.

And you might also want a solid pinion spacer, rather than the crush collar if you do much drag racing.

400? should be like 190 for gears and 120 for an entire rebuild kit. they have cheaper basic intstall kits too.

I HAVE TO AGREE THAT THUNDER RACING HAD THE BEST PRICE FOR THE GEAR & PINION AND THE KIT AS WELL AS ALL THE
FLUIDS.

ARE YOU SURE YOUR LOOKING AT THE RIGHT GEAR & PINION SET BY SLP, BECAUSE THEY DO JUST SELL THE GEAR & PINION SEPERATELY,

AND THUNDER RACING SELLS IT ALSO SEPERATELY TOO.

That $400 INCLUDES the TA Performance Girdle and main cap stud kit which run $175 by themselves! Plus it includes the oil, gaskets, additive, and everything but a carrier if needed and labor. It's a GREAT deal!

You can get the Motive gears from them for $190, plus the basic install kit for $50. So you're out $240 plus shipping and you're done.

The SLP kit is on sale right now for $240, but regularly $360, which is only $40 less than the Thunder deal, and it doesn't include the cover, cap stud kit, oil, additive or that other stuff.

Plus you add to that the fact that SLP doesn't have them in stock and it make Thunder even MORE attractive, IMO.

The main cap stud kit and the cover will help to reinforce the strength of the rear end.

The cover will also make it easier to drain and refill the rear in the future since it has a drain plug.

It's made of aluminum, so it helps cool better too.

Me, I would go ahead and get the full kit..

$190 gears
$90 install kit that's included in the full kit
$150 cover
$25 stud kit
$8 additive
$16 for oil
____
$479 seperately.

So save $80 by getting it all at once, it's worth it!

But to directly answer your question: No you don't NEED the entire kit. You NEED only the gears and basic kit. You'll have to reuse the ring gear bolts and pinion nut as well as your bearings that way, but you should be able to get by with it.

It's worth the extra money to go ahead and step up to AT LEAST the complete install kit (new bearings, ring gear bolts and pinion nut for $40 extra). But I think the full package is the best deal over all. That's what I got and have been thrilled with it!

No problem..

And yes, we'd ALL have fast cars if it were cheap.
