I have the 503 in my camaro. Very nice idle, no real loss in lowend but plenty of increased performance. Mileage is 17mpg at best, but if you want to play, you have to pay

Unless you have an absolute monster, you don't miss any power down low, just the curve is different so it feels like that. I made 340# by 2500rpm whereas on the stock cam I made quite a bit lower, but it peaked lower too.

Part of my mileage loss is due to the fact that I have 3.73 gears. The cam doesn't help either, but the gears do play a big part.

When ever you start adding significant power to a car, you are bound to wear parts out faster than they were designed for, especially if you "drive it like you stole it." When a powertrain piece in a car is designed, there are several things taken into account, one of which is the power that will be sent through it. If you start abusing it more than it was intended, exceeding its power capabilities, your are bound to break things or have to replace parts eventually. Its just part of the territory. Don't get me wrong, I have never been stranded or had troubles with my car, you just have to keep a closer eye on things and it is no longer as much of a "turn the key and go car."

I'd like to see these in your signature first.

1.6 RR's
E-WP
Longtube Headers
PCM Tune
Gears/Converter

Otherwise the cam will only be worth the sound it gives.

The Crane 227 "baby cam" would probably be perfect for you. If you feel like you want a little more, check out the CC305 or CC503.

Re: Best Performance Cam for a Summer DD

I would say the LT4 HOT cam. I have it with a tune, shortie headers and have used it with 4.11, 3.73, 3.42, and 3.23 gears. The majority of the use as a DD was with 3.73 gears. Other than it could use a bit more converter, it works quite well. The A/C can be used without any problem and it doesn't heat-up in traffic.
You can tell the car has a cam but it is not a Pro Stock type idle.
