Best off shelf Cam?

A friend of mine is looking to buy a camshaft and needs some input. Here is a little info on the car..............

Its a 95 Z28 and the engine was just honed reusing stock pistons, new rings, bearings and upgraded the rod bolts to ARP's. The engine has mildly ported heads, intake and the usual bolt-on's...ie LT's, 58mm TB, Borla cat-back, 4.10 gear,6-speed and it weighs around 3300-3400lbs.

The RWHP #'s are not really as important as the track times so with that said he is looking for a cam that has pushed car's with similar mods into the 11's. Keep in mind this will be mostly a track car with a little street time. I know people are going to say go with a custom grind but he wants it to be an off the shelf hydraulic roller .

After a little researching it seems the CC306 has proven to push LT1 car's into the 11sec zone. What do you all suggest?

Thanks for any help!

GM847? I'd choose that over a cc306 off the shelf.

Re: Best off shelf Cam?

The 847 and 306 seemed to be the two most popular cams when doing a search.

XE 230/236 isn't a bad choice either.

63-236/242-112

Comp Cams "Extreme" LT1 Camshaft, 236 / 242, .520 / .540 112 LSA, Very aggressive street/strip cam. Stroker engines, Heads, Headers, High Stall or M6, Gears, Computer Tuning Required.

--------

This is the cam i have and I like it. I'd say its imbetween the cc306 and the gm847.

Well right now it looks like it will be the 847 or the TN233XL Camshaft 233/239

I had the 233/239 in my 350 and let me tell you it sounded awesome. Until I spun a rod bearing...

I am going to run it in my 383 also (should be done in the next week or so)but I don't know exactly what its going to sound like. It will obviously be much more tame but time will tell.

Clip of the GM847 idle in a 350 from Atljar's website:

Re: Best off shelf Cam?

With as easy as it is to get a well thought and custom camshaft, thats the only way I would go. Comp Cams is usually a 2 day build time at most.

I have a grind I use 23x/24x 6xx/5xx 112LSA good cam makes gobs of power down low and pulls strong through the power band.

Re: Best off shelf Cam?

If I had it all to do ove again it would be LE3....
But for off the shelf gm847.

Didn't make any more tq than the cc306 for me, but it held the power band to a much higher rpm.

Ain't nothing wrong with an OTS grind as long as the heads are ported to accommodate.

Re: Best off shelf Cam?

Do you want to rev your motor past 6500 rpms?? If not, dont even think about the cc306 or the gm847...
