Best Header+Exhaust Combo?
Hey guys, I have a v6 now, but my dad (who is a car salesman
) is looking for a 97 z28 (so I can put all my ground effects and stuff on). So I was wondering what is the best header and exhaust system, in your opinion, for the LT1. Also, this may seem dumb, but I"ve gotten mixed responses, do you have to take the engine out to get headers on it? Please forgive me for my ignorance. I'm a simple v6 man lookin to go big. Anyway, also tell me some other bolt on mods, I just don't wanna have to take the engine apart or out. Thanks and God Bless

"Best" really means best for your intended purpose of use. Whatever ou buy for headers get them coated and they will last years longer and look much better. Uncoated headers look like crap in a couple of months.
Fore street use on a lightly modded car, 1 5/8 by Mac or Edelbrock are fine. Make certain you get the ones that are emmission compliant. While you are at it you may as well do a cat back system as well to improve the sound.
If you want more serious power and plan on doing heads/cam or a turbo or supercharger look for longtubes by Hooker. they are a pain in the butt and will not pass a visual inspection but they will provide the throughput necessary for more serious mods or a stroker. Again, get them coated. You will need a "Y" pipe and I suggest finding someone to make one for you. Less money and better fit than a premade unit. Also, try and calculate how much total exhaust you will need so you get the correct cat back system too. If you need longtubes you may need a 4" cat back. Your engine builder can assist you with this decision.
The motor can stay in the car. the headers will be a nightmare to install, but it is possible. Just have plenty of patience, beer, and more patience. Change the plugs and wires while you can get to them, and if you do long tubes expect problems with the dipstick. With shorties it shouldn't be a problem.
You should plan on purchasing some decent header gaskets too, not the cheapies that come for free. Also, get really good plug wires (ultra heavy duty) as headers throw a lot of heat under the hood.
