Best clutch -nonSpec
Best clutch -nonSpec
After blowing up my 2nd Stage 3 Carbon disc with basically stock motor, I am looking for the best alternative clutch disc (disc only) to purch within the next day or 2. Recommendations please.
autozone clutch kit for $195..life time warrenty.
Hold up fine to my abuse, after a year of use i got a brand new one, the old one looked pretty new, but since i had the tranny out might as well put a fresh clutch in for free
my car makes 348rwhp/344rwtq

yeah i blew mine up too.. they sent me another one.. and i sold it to someone who wanted it.
Go with a stock disc.. try and LT4 disk or SLP disk. Never hear about those blowing up. You have an LT4 pressure plate with your spec already... My clutch holds fine with 335wrhp and 340 torque

for the nitrous guy, I wouldn't take a chance at the autozone clutch, with bolt ons and nos you'll blow it, the trans is a pain to pull out so why do more work when you don't have to. Sticky tires plays an important role, sure the clutch is holding his 350 horses, but add some drag radials to it all the time and your gonna be replacing much sooner.
Well I dont run mine of sticky tires much, so I should be ok. If the stock clutch can hold a 150 shot on the street and hold up. I dont see why the Autozone clutch couldnt handle it occasionally. I usually dont spray more than a 100shot and I hardly even use it.
How much is the Mcleod single disc clutch and how much hp can it hold?

The consensus around town say if i buy a hays clutch that it will hold my current setup plus the 100 shot I plan to add. The horsepower of mine is unknown but its prolly close to 380 due to 1/8 times. The hays is only 260 out of jegs.
How disappointed am I going to be going to a stock clutch after the Stage 3? Funds are wearing down (still have to get new tires put on, sitting in the garage and need front end alignment) and have forced me to go with a stock clutch (just for now). How disappointed am I going to be going back to a stock clutch for a little while?
Well, my transmission guy called the guy who builds his racing clutches for him and apparently, in the past 6 months, has had 2-3 calls a week about the same problem out of Spec clutches (springs breaking) and apparently said that the center section in the Spec clutches are low quality. Clutch is also a made in China part. Have also heard of people on here having similar problems with their clutches. I would get another Stage 3 if I was sure that it would last at least a year of daily driving and occasional hard driving. If not, I want to be sure that if I do go with their Stage 2 part, that it too will not explode with a basically stock car. I am calling them tomorrow and if I can't get some type of deal and guarantee that I am not buying another 6 month grenade
, I will just go with a stock one
now, then upgrade with a different brand later when the funds will allow. I can't be pulling my trans out every 6 mths, this is

I was talking to a local clutch builder, as in above post. Went out to get a stock disc today. The guy told me that Spec used to only supply parts for CarQuest. The clutches are made in China and he showed me a four cylinder clutch, guess what, the center section matches EXACTLY to my Stage 3 disc. Same exact part. When comparing the springs of the stock disc to the Stage 3, the STOCK disc has springs which are twice sized on the diameter coils, twice the length and about 1 1/2 times times in spring diameter and the center section spring housing is MUCH heavier duty looking. THIS is why Spec Stage 3 clutches blow springs every so often and only carry a 120 day warranty, no matter which stage you get. Spec tries to say that I have misalignment somewhere in my transmission, but just had my trans checked out OK, input shaft OK, new pilot bushing, new trans mounts, no cracks or bends in bellhousing or crank walk. I am going to take a picture tomorrow showing the stock disc as compared to the Stage 3 and will post. I loved the clutch when it was in, but my car was not ran hard in the past 6 months since the last clutch was installed and everything was rebuilt/replaced in January and it blows out daily driving
. Before I found this out, I would recommend them, but not now, their solid disc is the only one I would get. They make a Stage 2 for C4 with solid center, but full faced Kevlar disc, so that may be a decent option to go with, but their sprung discs arent heavy duty enough.
