Best cam for stock setup??
Best cam for stock setup??
Im looking for a cam, and im mostly stock, what would be the best cam for my setup? im seriously lost when it comes to cam selection i dont understand at all really. All info would be greatly appreciated thanks!
Re: Best cam for stock setup??
there really is no "best camshaft", it will come down to what you want and can handle out of the setup you currently have or are aiming for
its give and take, you will give up some driveability and 'stealthiness' of stock to take the HP/TQ gains that you can live with for the intended purpose of the car
the camshaft is dependent on the buyers tolerances
what can you live with, what do you want, what is the use of the car?
take all those questions into account on your final decision on which is the best camshaft choice for you

most all camshafts will give noticeable gains both in HP and TQ, one question is how noticeable do you want it to be?
you can run anything from a tame but very good Crane 210/224 to the GM847 (234/242) and beyond
it will come down to what you want and can tolerate!
what kind of rpm are you willing to spin the bottom too?
can you handle very choppy idle?
is emissions a concern where you are in NY?
a larger duration camshaft (847/306 etc.) will 95% of the time take more rpm to see maximum gains out of a 350cid motor
you need to be more specific with use and goals plus what you want out of the car

By choppy idle to do u mean the RPM's will dip and rise? becuase if taht is so i have no problem becuase i am used to taht. my car has had an on and off problem wit that. Im looking to get this car into the high 300's rwhp range but no to soon, want at least 330ish rwhp in the next 6 months or so.
As for emissions i dont think that is problem my uncle has a shop and could probbaly get it done there. I want a cam taht will give power from 2000- at least 5000-5500 range

If you get a GM847, it will make probly around 340RWHP on stock heads, with headers and other bolt ons, RR's and such ... However, it would suck with the stock heads. Get them bitches ported at a reputable shop, give them the specs for an 847 and your gonna be damn close to your goal of very high 3XX RWHP
Do it rite the first time, dont get too small of a cam, and dont go too large or youll have to rev super high and that WILL kill your bottom end if its not built for it

The GM847 is a big cam for stock heads. It works, but drivability will be affected and the low end TQ may not be acceptable to you.
I would go with the Hotcam(218/228 duration 0.525",0.525" lift), or the Crane 210/224 duration. I've seen proven numbers as high as SAE 350 rwhp out of the hotcam with stock heads with a manual tranny. Most guys see about 330 rwhp with the hotcam kit with a manual tranny.
Both have great streetability, and will do great with stock heads and headers.
