Best cam for 3.42+M6?
Best cam for 3.42+M6?
Hello,
96 TA I'm modding for a buddy, needs to be very streetable. Need advice on cam selection, he wants the following to remain unchanged.
3.42 gears
M6
stock pulleys
stock throttle body
longtube headers
csi wp
CAI
I am going to put the cam in first with supporting valvetrain. But the heads would not come off to be ported until later on down the line. Nitrous is a probabilty down the road as well, but was hoping to build a strong streetable street NA car first.
I am concerned that too large of a cam and the car will feel like a dog down low with the 3.42's in an M6. What cam would give a moderate power increase without ported heads, and still work in conjunction with his combination??

Re: Best cam for 3.42+M6?
I installed the hot cam kit with SLP headers/ gutted cat. and a pcmforless tune in my '94 m6, w/3:42 gears. This combination provided good driveability and extended the power range to 6000+ rpm. The idle is set at 950rpm and there is a slight lope. There is minimal sacrifice at very low rpm. I notice some cam surge below 1300rpm in 1st and 2nd holding throttle steady. Under load or acceleration there is no bucking at low rpm. The power is simular to the stock cam at full throttle until 3500rpm then a noticable power increase all the way to 6200rpm. My rev limiter is set at 6200. The comp cams 305 has a wider lobe separation 114deg vs. the 112deg of the hot cam, I suspect this one may provide additional low end driveability. Good luck with your project.

I got a custom grind of the hotcam ground on a 110lsa + 4. thing has a nice wicked idle, but is gr8 with my 3.42 has power all around pulls like a raped ape from 2800 +. that was with my dualcats and slp pretzal headers. I now got pacesetter mids, and its a totally different story its fun though. Hotcam you cant go wrong with it
