Angry Battery Drainage

About 2 weeks ago, my car wouldnt start, i got a jump and headed off to school and didnt think much else of it. After school that day i jumped in and the car started fine, whatever i think. I park it at home and dont go anywhere that night, next morning same thing...this had been going on for the past 2 weeks, lil background:
I havent changed anything electrical within that time period (alarm, system, etc. have been on since i bought the car)
Battery holds a charge on its own fine
Alternator charges fine
All - and + connections coming off the battery are all clean and tight
This is starting to be a hassle, what else should i check?
TIA

Re: Battery Drainage

in the morning when you turn the key, does it try to crank or is it completely dead? If its totally dead then i would guess that somethign you have overlooked is killing the battery dead assuming the battery really is fine.

its completely dead, cant/wont crank at all....battery is fine, if i take it out of the car and let it sit overnight it holds the charge great

Re: Battery Drainage

something is obviously causing it to drain. Hook up a volt meter to the battery and then start to unplug fuses. See which one is causing the drain and then you'll have to trace out what is on that circuit which could be causing the drain.

Re: Battery Drainage

Just to be on the safe side, take the battery to Autozone, or someplace, and have it tested. I know you said the battery is fine, but I'd do it just to eliminate it from the problem.

Re: Battery Drainage

my brother inlaw's had the exact same problem, I'll ask him what was the problem, and reply back. That was the last thing they fixed before his camaro got stolen...

Re: Battery Drainage

There are hundreds of places to check. Start with the obvious stuff first. Unhook the amp from your system. Let it sit overnight. Get a test light and check for shorts to the different things in the car. Make sure the car is charging at a full 12 Volts or a tad higher. Make sure the battery is good with a free test from AutoJoke. Electrical problems are a nightmare. It usually is something relatively easy but when it's not it can be very time consuming. Dont get too aggrivated. I'm sure with a little help you will find it.

Re: Battery Drainage

You can't tell if the bat. is good by leaving it on the bench over night. You have to have a load test done on it. You can have 12v but not enough amps. to maintain that voltage for more than a few days.
All new cars have accessaries that drain the bat. ALL the time. But it should take weeks to drain a good bat. not over night.

Re: Battery Drainage

Definitely get the battery tested before you spend time looking for a drain. Anytime I've had a battery go dead, it'll only work partially from then on, no matter if you charge it or not. A small load (as most cars have when off) can easily kill a damaged battery.

Re: Battery Drainage

Should have said this earlier, i took the batt to AZ little more than a week ago, he ran all the tests and it passed easy...amp has been unhooked for a couple days now, i have the fan temp set higher than usual so they turn on less often, thats about all i can think of....hopefully it'll stop raining soon
