bas gas fumes [ trunk area]

since i bought the car ive been getting bad gas fumes in the car when driving, it seems to be coming from the truck area by the tank, is there any vent back there for the gas tank or just the gas cap [ new cap] what can this be , my be i'll pull the tank and see what on top of it .

thanks for any help

First look things over for leaks. If there are none, its probably related to the "EEC" vapor collection system. There is a carbon canister in the drivers rear fender, behind the fill line, and a couple of lines that connect the canister to the top of the fuel tank. The lines may be rotten or loose (common problem), the pressure relief valve may be open, the canister may be saturated with fuel. The problem will be made even worse if your fuel pump is failing, and overheating the fuel in the tank, increasing the vapor load to the canister. Another possibility is that the "purge" system on the engine that pulls the vapors out of the canister may be messed up - failed purge solenoid, plugged line from the canister to the solenoid, cracked vacuum line from the solenoid to the throttle body.

You can examine the canister by removing a plastic panel inside the fender well. But the lines are very hard to see/follow because they go up and over the tank.

I have this same problem. Gonna try the nifty search function to find out more about the system. Thanks

The only code you can get in an OBD-I (93-95) is DTC 26, indicating an electrical problem with the purge solenoid.
