Bad vibration under braking, and cruising, new brakes and alignment... what else?
Bad vibration under braking, and cruising, new brakes and alignment... what else?
Ok I have this bad vibration coming from the front of my car. It can be noticed at highway speeds as sort of an undulating vibration, just like having fix a flat in it. Then when braking it's like having horribly warped rotors. I noticed this with the old rotors so i swapped them to drill/slot rotors. Still the same thing.
I took the wheels off for inspection one day and everything looked fine except for the drivers outter tie rod which the swivel joint was loose. I had both sides replaced and alined. Still noticed the same thing. The only other thing i can think of would be a horribly balanced wheel. Here are the symptoms, it's a 1995 Firebird Formula with 69,000 miles.
Front end vibrates in kind of an undulating patter on the highway. It like is fine for a second, then vibrates, then stops, then vibrates, very rhythmetic.
steering wheel and brake pedal vibrate under any load of braking. It seems to vibrate less under heavy, almost lock-up braking.
The wheels spin fine when the car is jacked up, no bearing or ball-joint play.
A little more info.
The car hit a deer from which i fixed the wheel well. No frame damage other than where the headlight attached
The driver side rim has a hairline crack about an inch in lenght on the inside of the rim and has a slow leak. I'm thinking maybe this rim was on the other side during the accent and could be bent. I will swap the back rims when i put the ZR1s sometime this week.
I'm out of ideas otherwise, any other problems that would cause this?

had similar vibration with the same symptoms. Turned out to be warped rotors. Get some new rotors with pads and I am alomost sure your problem will go away
Around $90 fix if you are not going with expensive rotors

Re: Bad vibration under braking, and cruising, new brakes and alignment... what else?
I have brand new rotors. I thought they were warped so i replaced them. They are drilled and slotted with ceramic pads. About 4,000 miles on them now. It vibrated before them, and it vibrates with them. The passenger side (accident side) has a little more wear on the outside of the tire.
Last night i took it out on some twisty turny back roads (i.e no lines, nothing but harvested corn fields) and ran put it through hell. 35mph turns at about 90, slowing down hard, hard braking, the car steers fine, never broke traction all though i could feel the rear slipping because my tires are bald, but i was breaking pretty heavily and it never got anyworse or any better. I think one of the wheels is out of balance.

My fiance's car did the same thing. She got 4 new tires on it about a month ago and never had the vibration again.
You might want to try swapping the rear tires/wheels to the front, then driving around to see if it's still occuring or coming from the front. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to do. Sometimes the fabric inside the tire can fracture and cause it to lose integrity in that area, causing a soft spot.
