Bad Piston rings, time for bottom rebuild. $2500 budget, what should I do?

NOT including labor (my dad with help since he can build a SBC in his sleep) what can be done for about $2500 on a bottom end rebuild? My top end should still be good shape (rebuild by previous owner 3 years ago). Although I want to put a cam (possibly an LT4 Hotcam?) and 1.6RRs in it.

Is a 383 w/ streetable cam (this is my only car, have to keep it all usuable) doable in this price range safely?

What compression should I aim for on it?

What is a good streetable cam?

Any other advice, I'm completely open.

$2500 without labor and your only doing the bottom end + cam, + springs + roller rockers.
$300 cam
$175~ springs
$300 rockers
$200 for pistons (Do not know what you are aiming for, so forged vs hyper is unknown)
Reuse rods (again no idea what you are aiming for)
New crank anywhere from $180~ - over your budget. Again no idea what you "want" to do.
Bearings, seals, gaskets, odds and ends you will need to take into account.

What I want to do is have a reliable motor for a daily that can trap 112-115 (at least 110) but I don't know if that is feasible on this motor. Reliability comes before all though. I need an idea of what actual parts are needed for this too.

If money allows, I'd love to grab some 3.73s for it too.

go with a 355, keithblack pistons, stock rods, stock crank, new rod bolts, bearings, etc, and a cc503.

that'll get you your goals, and should be very close to your budget.

383 is not needed, theres 355s on here running faster than 383s on here

OK, this we can do.

What Reamo said, keep the 383 in mind anyhow because he is not paying for labor.

Is the 383 any less reliable/streetable than keeping it 355?

Also, I don't know too much about cams but I've heard of the CC503. How it is for drivability in Orlando traffic?

Everyone recommends the cc503 for a daily, so I would imagine it would feel close to stock.

Power is in heads more than displacement, that is a complete unknown to us so we can't help much on the end power goal.

The 503 is a nice mild cam for a 383.

To really make recommendations though it would be good to know what is in the engine and needs to be replaced??

I would look at polishing the crank at $50
Maybe rebuild the rods $160-200
Mahle PowerPak pistons and ring kit $600
Rebalance $200
Maybe $400 in bearings, gaskets, timing set
Call that about $1500 leaving $1000 for surprises and valvetrain. That can get eaten up pretty fast since about as cheap as you will find a new cast cam is $250, an easy $150 on springs. Do you have roller rockers yet??

i wouldnt both rebuilding the stock rods when for about $250 or so you could grab some scat forged I beams with 7/16 capscrews. Im working on a shortblock now, got about 1000 into the 4340 rods, 2618 forged pistons, bearings, arp 2bolt main stud kit. gotta figuer another $400 for gaskets and seals. About another $400 into honing (block was good), balancing, filing the rings, and polishing the crank. Under $2k if you assemble it yourself and good for 5-600hp. That would leave you enough for cam and springs. Timing set might push you a little over budget, but pending you goals you might be able to get away with just a new stock chain, not a whole set.

We don't know that he has stock rods. He said it is a 383.

No, its still a 355. Bottom end in this car has never been touched.

Thanks for all the help. I'm gonna keep riding it until the motor starts getting weak (still seams to be as strong as before, just smoking a bit). Hope to have the money ready within the next 2-3 months and at this rate the car should last that long. I've seen SBCs go a long time with messed up rings lol (not saying it's a good thing though)

While chances are it will last. My car ran great, one 6500~ rev and the bearings went just like that.
