back exhaust manifold bolts broken

anyone have any suggestions? i have a 94 z28, the two back bolts on the driver side are broken off in the head, and has a nice exhaust leak, im sure the head needs to be taken off to be properly worked on, and have the bolts taken out, unless anyone has an idea

thats what happened to my car . I just threw in a 383 with ported heads . But yea you will have to take the head off and have the bolts removed at the very least. Good time for at least headers

Depends on whether you can back out the broken screws with vicegrips once the mainifold is removed or in the alternative, drill and use an easyout to remove the screws. Since this might prove to be a time consuming and diffuicult task because of the location, then you might want to pull the head (s). If you do wind up pulling the heads, you might as well throw on some 1.6RRs and springs while the heads are off.....and as mentioned, headers would be a really nice addition. JMHO

Sorry to hear about that

I had that happen in my 95, we ended up having to take the head off to
get at the bolt. Ended up going with ported heads and a custom cam
since it was off anyway.

It's tough to reach those back ones with easy outs while they are in the car.

Its a common problem with LT1s. Time for headers since they use the inboard bolt holes, not the outboard ones that have the broken bolts in them.

Absolutely, doing it without is a sure way to break bolts.

Agreed. I usually stress this as one of the more critical steps of installing headers. I soaked all of my bolts down for several days with PB Blaster before even putting a wrench in there and each one of them came out without the least bit of effort.

Agreed, the stuff works wonders, and as this gentleman said, waiting a few days helps even more.

Same 2 bolts broke on mine also. One I was able to remove with vice grips. The other one had to be drilled out and I installed a helicoil. It has been good for 200,00 miles now. I had to remove the head to do it because it is too tight back there.

Good luck!

pb blaster is in a spray can like wd40, it penetrates the bolts and gets into the thread to loosen them up and wear away at the rust on the bolts so they dont break when u try to break the torque on them... should be able to pick it up at any auto store

Doesn't sound like you need it now since the screws don't have any heads. At any rate, advise you use ARP bolts next time and correct tightning so as not to booger the "threads" in the aluminum "heads"---it rhymes.

On the other hand, won't hurt to use it to get the rest of the screw out, once you can get a hold of them.

If your gaskets are blown out because of the screw problem, better replace the gaskets. Since the stockers are probably in pieces rather than just one piece, might be good idea to replace with the single gasket in order to make life easier. JMHO
