Average total cost of a stroker motor?
Average total cost of a stroker motor?
I was thinking about getting my car repainted, getting new wheels, and just putting a bigger cam in it over the summer, but now the thought of blowing off making it look better, and putting a stroker motor in it has crossed my mind.
For those who have one... give me a ballpark figure of the entire cost, parts, labor, everything (I wouldn't be building this myself) it would take to have the motor put in my car and running. I just want a basic number to see if this idea would even be pheasable for my summer budget.

Re: Average total cost of a stroker motor?
I have nearly $3500 in a fully forged, billet four bolt 383 short block and I think its a smokin' deal
I've seen budget 383 shortblocks go for as little as $2300 but that doesn't include heads, valve train, intake and other parts.
It really depends on what your plans for your stroker are...NA, or Forced Induction play a major factor in your build.
When gaskets and everything get added into the mix the price goes up due to nickel and dime stuff.
If I were to guess what it would cost to do a budget build, I would say that it could probably be done for 4 -5 thousand when you consider that you won't be doing any of the labor (correct me if I'm wrong).
I'm sure that there have been some that did a build for 2500 but I couldn't have gotten it that cheap for what I am after.
I saw a post on here the other day that a guy had 10K in his.
I guess to put it in a nut shell...the rule holds true here as in many other aspects of racing.
Speed costs money. And if your like me your budget gives you a little reality check once in a while.
Good luck.

Re: Average total cost of a stroker motor?
yeah a lot of it depends on what kind of stroker and what level budget mid or hi-po...i mean you will get good results from all but it depends on what else you are planning on doing. but yeah i would agree any where from 3 to 5 thousand. I mean my 355 after everything was all said and done including headers and a new y pipe was about 4k but that was including some ceramic coating as well. You could also look around on here and other places to see if anyone is selling one already built you maybe able to find one for a good deal and olny have to deal with putting it in
Re: Average total cost of a stroker motor?
Anywhere from ~$2,500-$10,000+ for the shortblock. A typical stroker short block will be in the $3,500 range not including R+R (removal and replacement). Remember, without heads/cam/valvetrain upgrades a 383/396 won't really make any signficant power over a 350.

Well I paid 1300 for used 383 with eagle crank, Luniti Pro mod rods and SRP/JE pistons. With 4 bolt oliver splayed mains and polished lifter valley. Only 12k miles on it. Also came with cc 306 and Comp R lifters.
I dont know what the guy was smoking when he sold it too me.

For the most part my 383 d is a budget build but thats becuase I know a few people and I can get some good deals. THe machining didnt cost me anything and all motor components are 30% off regular price.
Eagle 4340 crank 3.75'
Eagle Hbeams 6.00'
mahle pistons and rings 4.030
total shortblock costs roughly 1100
LE3 heads and custom grind cam 2000
converted super vic intake and carb 800
rough estimate for all of the nickel and dime stuff to make it work high estimate 1000
total: 4900 doing all of the work and assembley ourselves
theres more that im doing to the rest of the car that doesnt figure in but those numbers are pretty good estimate from the prices I remember

Re: Average total cost of a stroker motor?
Go buy yourself a shortblock and save some money. Alot of performance companies can get you a deal on shortblock/longblocks and you'll still save ALOT of money.
An example of this is http://www.golensengineservice.com/ they do some awesome work and can do the mods in house and then send you the long/short block of your choosing and you'll be very satisfied. I know 3 people that have went with them and were pleased to say the least with their work. And for under $5000 you can't beat a forged bottom end 383 longblock.
IMO: Shortblocks/longblocks are definately the way to go unless you want some super power engine that runs off nuclear power, lol.

BTW, thanks for all the responses. I'm still not sure what I'm gonna do this summer, but from these reponses, a stroker motor is still pheasable... just depends on whether I want to spend all my money on the motor, or whether I want to make my crappy looking car look decent and have a semi-decent motor.
Re: Average total cost of a stroker motor?
Kyle: as I posted earlier, keep in mind that a "stroker" per se is not going to net you much hp. The hp will reside in the heads, cam, and valvetrain.
