Autometer guages(oil/temp) use stock senders?
Autometer guages(oil/temp) use stock senders?
Hey guys i would like to put some autometer guages in the a/c vent in the center of my dash. I will be gettting trans temp, water temp and oil press. My question is will they be anymore accurate than the stock ones(oil/water) if i just get the electric over manual ones and hook them up to the stock sending units. Or should i just go with the good old fashion manual ones and string plastic hose all over the place?
Thanks

I've had mechanical ones and I've had electrical ones. I like the electrical much better.
You cannot connect the guages to the stock sending units - that will not work. You need to use the sending units that come with the guages you buy.

Re: Autometer guages(oil/temp) use stock senders?
I have both electric (fuel pressure) and mechanical (oil pressure, nitrous pressure) in the center A/C vents. Its not that hard to run either. But,with the temperature gauges, a "mechanical" unit is a major PITA though. The sensor is a "bulb" and its connected to the gauge using a fixed length capillary tube. The tube and bulb can not be separated from the gauge, so you would have to thread the bulb and the tube through the firewall and the A/C ducting behind the center vents, and that would be a problem.
I have an electric oil temp sensor in the A-pillar, and I drilled and tapped the oil drain plug and threaded the oil temp sensor into there. For the coolant temp, there's the plugged hole in the passenger side head, between #6 and #8 (same as the one for the stock gauge sensor in the drivers side head). If you can't access that one because of headers or something, you can put a brass "tee" in one of the coolant lines and install the sensor there. I used the line from the back of the heads to the radiator on my 94, but the hose routing is different on your 95.
