I would think, if you had it geared right, that you'd prefer the manual...could be that a 6-speed would be better suited than a 4-speed manual...?

I was in your position too, Zack. But I got tired of replacing my autos (didn't know it was an out-of-balance driveshaft). I finally figured I always wanted a stick, so I saved up for a year and did it. Haven't looked back since...

It's more to do with control. In an autocross you have to do a lot of things very quickly. I prefer driving with two feet, left brake, right throttle. I have much more control without having to manage the extra footwork required to shift the stick. Don't get me wrong, I loved my manuals, I love the feel, the sound, everything. And there are times when I wished I had one. But I feel right at home in my A4.

Wouldn't you be able to come out of turns better with a manual? I mean, I suppose you could get a manual valve body...

Exactly what I had with a ratchet shifter. Never miss a gear, instant shifts. With the right stall, you can really come out of a corner!!!!!

I have an auto because that's what the car had in it when i got it. In the beginning i would tell myself i wish it were a stick. not anymore. I smoked to many guy's that didn't launch like me. I'm not saying that would be everyone, but the confidence of predicting the next 10 seconds or so ( on the street, Im talkin on the street) is pretty amazing, especially when you look at their girlfriends face. With the drag radials and the gears it'''s almost a sure thing everytime. BUT a stick is more fun to drive, Everything from a 13spd to a 5spd. i have no regrets with the auto my $.02

If you are tight on cash, get the A4. It won't let you down. And it's not as slow as some people think it is.

I use to be like all you auto guys when I owned one. I always tried to justify why I liked my auto better than a manual. Once I swapped to a manual and have learned it very well, my opinion changed completely. The only reason you launch better than the manuals is because it's much easier to launch an auto than a manual. Just load the torque converter and when the light turns green you mash the pedal. No flame, man, but any kid with two legs and one arm can race an automatic pretty decently. Manuals are a little trickier, but when mastered, would be just as good and sometimes better than an auto. If both cars had slicks and both had equally skilled drivers/modified cars, my money would be on the manual...

If youre low on money DONT get an auto. Rebuilds are $$$$$. Mine cost me 1800 on my truck. The only thing you really have to replace on the manual is usually just the clutch which is fairly cheaper.

6-speed is pimp! I can get about 280 miles a tank if I drive it at 65mph on highway.

Get what you want. I love my 6-speed. Its a pain in traffic sometimes but for me that doesnt happen too often. I learned how to drive a stick on my friend's dad's 86 Celica 5-speed. IMO my Z28 is easier to drive than the Celica. Driveablility in these cars is great. I vote for 6-speed over the auto (of course).

I like my automatic (rebuilt 4L60E with a Trans-Go shift kit and manual valvebody) but I think when I get my newer Camaro it'll be a 6spd for the reliability.. my auto went out with only 38k on her.. course I drivew her hard.. but not that hard.
