Auto trans needs work. should I switch to 6 SPD?
I bought my camaro a while back and my friend who I purchased it from said the trans was once rebuilt. Now I add More HP and it starts locking into second at WOT.
If it needs even 300 dollars worth of work I think I am going to sell it and get the real deal.
Where is the cheapest conversion kit sold? I found a nice kit with Everything for 1500 + shipping.
Anybody?

The 4L60E can be built to take alot of abuse you just need to find someone who can handle the rebuild.
If you really want the 6 speed then go for it. But if you are doing it cause you think the auto can,t handle it then you just need the right builder.
I have seen a 4L60E live behind a 575 RWHP SC 355 in a 94, granted he went through 4 builders before he found a guy that could build it but it can be done.

The bottom line is that transmissions, manual or automatic, if not working properly are very frustrating. I switched from a manual to an automatic because I couldn't keep a clutch in it. I am please with the result.
If you plan of dragging, you will be much happier with an automatic. If you like the corners, a stick is the way to go. The clutch will be an issue so start researching before you make you final decision. How far do you want to go with the car and how you intend to use it will have a lot to do with your component selection.

Thats why I should definately switch to a manual. I live in boston (very close to city) and the roads here aren't very long in most cases. I will never bring my car to the drag strip. It has been built to be a high performance street car. You know how when you hook up a car you can definately go overboard buying high-perf. parts. I made sure I didn't in order to keep it a very nice STREET car. I have afunny feeling I am going to get bored of this car quickly unlesss I have somthing to make it like a real sports car.
I know one thing. If I was to keep an auto I would even go as far as using a high performance torque converter so I might as well get a stick. I found a place that has full conversions for 1500.00 and I think the SLP clutch and flywheel is around 700.00 ... I want ot drop this 4L60E
The good thing is I allready have 3.73 gears and nice wheels and tires so I could add N2o at any time and have the right setup for it.
What kind of clutch should I get for a street car that will see some action?

I have heard good things about the SLP clutch in general and very few complaints. I see more pronounced opinions (either pro or con) on Spec or Ram. I see the most complaints about Centerforce.
The stock clutch is actually quite good although it can be overpowered easily. The McLeod brand is about the best you can buy overall and the Street Twin will take any abuse you can throw at it, but you do pay significantly for that level of performance. Again, it depends on how you plan on using the car and what the actual power levels will be.

How much is a mcleod or street twin as opposed to the slp setup? I plan on racing my car against my friends. No slicks on the car so it won't put a ton of abuse on the drive line and I have a 10 bolt rear that has been hooked up quite a bit. My tires are stock corvette goodyear eagle F-1's (pricey bastards) so I don't abuse them.

Its all about how much $$ you wanna spend,
get a GM dealer tranny(auto) with a 3y 50k warranty
I got mine for $1,190 installed (if you go that route make sure you call around your local chevy/pontiac dealerships at the end of the month, for some reason thats when they will give you the best deal)

I got the same deal you got spoogen, but even spoo would agree with me if he looked you have A large list of mods and you got a hypertech the second the tranny would be in your car the warrenty would be void

I don't see with the mods you have why your tranny would be going south unless it was not built right to begin with. Its not like your making major power unless theres a Cam and Heads you didn't put in the sig. Or your abusing it.
I will tell you this you think that an auto is a pain, wait till you fry that clutch and have to change it on a regular basis. You will be wishing you had the auto back.
But if you want the 6 speed it will be fun, not as consistent thats for sure and the clutch changes will be alot of fun too

I have been driving stick and high performance cars like these for a while now and i've never fried a clutch yet, i love manual cars and have allways wanted one myself. I am leaning towards manual. For some reason they sell for more on ebay and in want ads too. It would probably be a better long term investment. I probably won't do heads and cam for a while but I will spray her a tinsy bit. I have heard that the T56 can handle up to 600 HP and I won't be coming close to that. It's getting a lightweight flywheel and special choice of clutch with the short stick B&M I have heard of a beefed up output shaft upgrade and I would be good to go. I figured it all out along with the $200 install fee I was quoted by my high performance mechanics. I would be doing the pedal assembly and some other things and he would do the grunt work.
