Auto Tranny feels like its starting in 3rd gear???

I don't do this often, but I have a friend who has a 95 caprice. He describes his problem as this... The tranny feels as though it is starting out in 3rd gear. My first reaction is that it is a bad filter or low on fluid. He has taken it to a shop who has quoted him $600 to fix it. What's you alls opinion on the matter? By-the-way: It should have the same 4L60E as our Camaros, correct? Thnxs everyone...

Damn you got two threads going on this...so let me start off by saying

There's a difference?

just messing with you....

it could be the tranny valvebody is on its way down the crapper or it could be the car is bogging real bad because of an ignition problem, or clogged cat...does this guy know cars well enough to know that it IS or isn't starting in 3rd?

He definitely does not.... He said could it be possible that his K&N filter caused his tranny to go.... Now before you say what I think you're gonna say. No his filter is not installed backward or oiled up too much. I asked him and it started well after he installed it.

Unfortunately I cannot go with him to diagnose the problem since he lives quite a few miles away.

You know, I'm talking to him now...and I'm about to wash my hands of it. He's starting to annoy me with unsure answers. He says that if he drops it in 1st gear (manually) that it works. In other words he can shift it like a manual and that when he (manually) shifts it from 1st to second and second to third it takes awhile to transition. I'm still gonna help him. But I hate it when I'm trying to diagnose something and he's thinking, "just fix it." I thank you for the help you've given me so far though.

yeah that definitely would be an easy fix. We're at work right now and the cars at his house so we'll try that later on... What do you think about the clogged filter idea?

Its definately possible...has he every had the thing flushed? Not just changed the fluid but flushed? Sometimes a valve will get clogged and flushing and backflushing it will remove the debris...
