I think you'd be better off with a T56 6-speed. www.speedautomotive.com sells a complete conversion kit for $1500.

The T5 wouldn't even hold up to the 3rd Gen TPI V8's.... that's why the really high (235!!!) HP versions were not even available with a manual tranny. I believe there is a high capacity model called the "world class" T5, but even that is not gonna be anywhere as strong as the T56.

Or are you looking at a Liberty 5-speed, or similar?

T5

If you decide to go to a T5, I've got the perfect solution. I’ve got a complete T5 trans. setup from an 88’, 305 V8 Camaro, including everything that you would need to make a swap except the peddles, I will still need them for my car. I just recently put a Fastburn 385hp Crate Motor in and swapped out the T5 with a fourth gen. six speed. I just bought a centerforce dual friction clutch last week and had it installed to break in the new motor, but it would not fit the six speed trans. I also have a Hurst Short Shifter as well new GM clutch pedal assymbly including master and slave cylinders. You might be able to find a used system somewhere with stock parts, but this setup is as good as you can get! I can go as low as half the money as a 6speed. Let's talk.
